McClendon wins challenge of close call at first

NEW YORK -- Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon successfully challenged a call on a Mike Zunino grounder leading off the fifth inning of Tuesday's 6-3 victory over the Yankees, with umpires overturning their original out call and giving Seattle's catcher what turned out to be a crucial base hit.

Replays showed Zunino beat the throw from second baseman Brian Roberts, thus leading to a reversal of first-base umpire Bill Miller's out call.

The ruling paid off for the Mariners, with Zunino eventually scoring Seattle's first run on a bases-loaded groundout by Robinson Cano. A Corey Hart double and Justin Smoak single, both with two outs, gave the Mariners three more runs in the frame and a 4-2 lead against left-hander CC Sabathia, and they wound up riding that big inning to victory in the series opener.

"I felt like I beat it just because the play happened right in my peripheral [vision]," said Zunino. "It was a bang-bang play, and I hit it and sort of peeked in the dugout and saw them answering the phone right away, so I just hung out. Luckily for that, because I thought I had a good chance of beating that."

Zunino wound up with a career-best four hits in the game, and none was bigger than the rally-starting infield single.

"Just whatever I could do to start that inning," Zunino said. "I was just trying to get on base and I had two strikes on me, so I was just trying to put the ball in play. And luckily I was able to beat it out."

The Yankees had no argument with the decision.

"The replay is what it is," said Sabathia. "He was safe."

Sore foot keeps Gardner from starting lineup

NEW YORK -- Brett Gardner's left foot was still sore a day after getting hit by Angels reliever Ernesto Frieri in the eighth inning of Saturday's game.

Gardner underwent an X-ray after the Yankees' 4-3 win over Los Angeles, and it came back negative. Before Sunday's game, New York manager Joe Girardi said Gardner told him his foot was feeling better despite the lingering soreness.

The speedy outfielder continued to undergo pregame treatment, and Girardi said that if he came through it OK, he could be available to play at some point in the Yankees' series finale.

But the preference is to avoid using him.

"If you could, you would like to," Girardi said. "I've got to see if he's available after a couple hours."

New York is off on Monday, potentially giving Gardner two full days of rest.

Gardner entered Sunday hitting .272, with eight RBIs and six stolen bases through 23 games.

Ichiro Suzuki started in left field and batted ninth for the Yankees on Sunday.

Yankees working to keep suspended Pineda sharp

NEW YORK -- With Michael Pineda suspended for 10 games following his ejection for having pine tar on his neck in Wednesday's game against Boston, the challenge for the Yankees is keeping Pineda sharp until he can be slotted back into the rotation.

Manager Joe Girardi said Pineda threw a bullpen session Sunday, and will throw a simulated game on Tuesday so that the right-hander can face live hitters.

"We're trying to take every precaution to keep him sharp," Girardi said.

Home-plate umpire Gerry Davis ejected Pineda in the second inning on Wednesday after finding a brown substance on Pineda's neck. Following the game, Pineda admitted it was pine tar. On Thursday, Major League Baseball suspended Pineda for 10 games.

Pineda, whom the Yankees acquired in a trade with Seattle in January 2012, was having a strong start to a critical season for both him and the team. Through four starts, he was 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA, three walks and 15 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings.

Girardi said Pineda will likely threw another bullpen session on Friday.

"And then he'll be ready to go on Monday, "Girardi said, "like he's getting an extra day's rest."

Solarte scratched late with sore shoulder

NEW YORK -- Yankees infielder Yangervis Solarte was scratched from Sunday night's lineup with a sore right shoulder.

Solarte was slated to hit eighth and play second base in New York's series finale against the Angels. Brian Roberts got the start in his place.

After the game, manager Joe Girardi said Solarte jammed his shoulder diving for a ball in Friday's game. Solarte didn't play Saturday. After watching Solarte take batting practice Sunday, Girardi could tell he wasn't 100 percent and "didn't look the same swinging."

That's when Girardi decided to remove him from the lineup.

"He had a test done, and the test came back good," Girardi said. "There's no damage to his shoulder. He just jammed it a little bit and we've got to get through it."

Girardi said not playing Sunday and having the off-day Monday could be all the rest Solarte's shoulder needs.

After signing with the Yankees as a free agent in January, Solarte earned a spot on the Major League roster at the start of the season. Through 21 games, the 26-year-old is hitting .301 with one home run, 13 RBIs and a .400 on-base percentage.

• Infielder Brendan Ryan played in a rehab game with Class A Advanced Tampa on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. The shortstop has been on the disabled list since Spring Training with a cervical spinal nerve injury.

For Beltran, job extends beyond on-field duty

NEW YORK -- On the day that Carlos Beltran was finally able to hold up a Yankees jersey and call the Bronx his office, team officials talked a lot about his switch-hitting power and his postseason pedigree as the driving forces behind his big three-year contract. The job may be to play right field, but Beltran believes there is much more to it.

Watch the dugout closely. Beltran is often in the ear of a younger player, dispensing advice or telling a story that might apply to a situation. He is even occasionally seen stepping in to serve as a media interpreter for a player who is not confident with his English, and Beltran said that is the responsibility of a veteran.

"You have to be available for the younger guys," Beltran said. "When you see something that you think can help them do better or when they're going through tough times, sometimes they don't know how to deal with those types of situations. You just have a little conversation with them, let them know that, 'Hey, you know what, man, this is baseball. You have to continue to come and work.'"

Those are the brands of positive messages that Beltran has added to the mix. This spring, an invitation appeared on a bulletin board at George M. Steinbrenner Field, notifying players about a social mixer of sorts. Beltran was the driving force, allowing the Minor League players to get some face time with the big league squad. The underlying message: We're all in this together.

"Every year I have done it differently, in different ways," Beltran said. "Sometimes I take five, 10 guys to eat. I just want to let them know that what they're going through, I went through, and if I can make it, they can make it. It's about encouraging them to work hard and take advantage of the opportunities as a ballplayer."

Beltran, 37, also picked up a memorable assist earlier this month. Rookie Yangervis Solarte has been working on his English and can hold a casual conversation, but after the infielder stroked three hits in his first big league start on April 3 in Houston, Solarte was visibly nervous when asked for a couple of on-field interviews.

While most of Solarte's teammates packed up their gear and headed down the clubhouse tunnel at Minute Maid Park, Beltran lingered on the field of the emptying stadium, serving as an interpreter while the 26-year-old Solarte completed interviews for the Yankees' television and radio broadcasts.

"That man is willing to do anything you ask him to do, whether it's putting him someplace he's never been or moving him in the order," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who has already called on Beltran to make his first career appearance at first base. "He just wants to play and he wants to contribute. It's very, very unselfish."

Even though Beltran has been one of the more productive Yankees in the early going, racking up American League Player of the Week honors for the period from April 7-13, some have mentioned a feeling that he has almost been overshadowed on this star-studded roster.

"And I feel fine with that," Beltran said. "Basically, I'm not a person that cares about that."

Beltran's comfort in the spotlight, or lack thereof, may be attributable to his prior exposure to New York. After first pitching his services to the Yankees, who were already set in center field with Bernie Williams at the time, Beltran played seven seasons with the Mets beginning in 2005.

His time there, very productive statistically, had several ups and downs and ended sourly. But other than different laundry and a change in commute, Beltran said that his first month playing for the Yankees hasn't felt all that different than being across town.

"I think you have to come, you have to do your job and you have to understand that you're going to have good days, you're going to have bad days," Beltran said. "Some days you're going to come through, some days you won't come through. You just have to deal with whatever comes. It's just part of playing in a big market."

Beltran said that he feels fortunate to be experiencing so much of his career in New York. One major difference in Beltran's second tour is a change of home address. At the urging of his wife, Jessica, Beltran parted with the Long Island home they owned during his Mets career and chose an apartment on Manhattan's East Side.

"I like it, man. My wife loves it," Beltran said. "You go down and there's a bunch of things to do. Now living in the city I'm like -- man, I missed a lot, you know? The first seven years, I didn't have the time to spend time in the city.

"My wife said the city was good, so I said, 'I want to live in a house, but if you want to live in the city, let's give it a try.' I'm in love with everything. It's so simple, so easy. Just go out and take a taxi and go here, come back. I had a car and I don't know what I'm going to do with it. I'm just happy."

Sore foot keeps Gardner from starting lineup

NEW YORK -- Brett Gardner's left foot was still sore a day after getting hit by Angels reliever Ernesto Frieri in the eighth inning of Saturday's game.

Gardner underwent an X-ray after the Yankees' 4-3 win over Los Angeles, and it came back negative. Before Sunday's game, New York manager Joe Girardi said Gardner told him his foot was feeling better despite the lingering soreness.

The speedy outfielder continued to undergo pregame treatment, and Girardi said that if he came through it OK, he could be available to play at some point in the Yankees' series finale.

But the preference is to avoid using him.

"If you could, you would like to," Girardi said. "I've got to see if he's available after a couple hours."

New York is off on Monday, potentially giving Gardner two full days of rest.

Gardner entered Sunday hitting .272, with eight RBIs and six stolen bases through 23 games.

Ichiro Suzuki started in left field and batted ninth for the Yankees on Sunday.

NEW YORK -- With Michael Pineda suspended for 10 games following his ejection for having pine tar on his neck in Wednesday's game against Boston, the challenge for the Yankees is keeping Pineda sharp until he can be slotted back into the rotation.

Manager Joe Girardi said Pineda threw a bullpen session Sunday, and will throw a simulated game on Tuesday so that the right-hander can face live hitters.

"We're trying to take every precaution to keep him sharp," Girardi said.

Home-plate umpire Gerry Davis ejected Pineda in the second inning on Wednesday after finding a brown substance on Pineda's neck. Following the game, Pineda admitted it was pine tar. On Thursday, Major League Baseball suspended Pineda for 10 games.

Pineda, whom the Yankees acquired in a trade with Seattle in January 2012, was having a strong start to a critical season for both him and the team. Through four starts, he was 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA, three walks and 15 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings.

Girardi said Pineda will likely threw another bullpen session on Friday.

"And then he'll be ready to go on Monday, "Girardi said, "like he's getting an extra day's rest."

Solarte scratched late with sore shoulder

NEW YORK -- Yankees infielder Yangervis Solarte was scratched from Sunday night's lineup with a sore right shoulder.

Solarte was slated to hit eighth and play second base in New York's series finale against the Angels. Brian Roberts got the start in his place.

After the game, manager Joe Girardi said Solarte jammed his shoulder diving for a ball in Friday's game. Solarte didn't play Saturday. After watching Solarte take batting practice Sunday, Girardi could tell he wasn't 100 percent and "didn't look the same swinging."

That's when Girardi decided to remove him from the lineup.

"He had a test done, and the test came back good," Girardi said. "There's no damage to his shoulder. He just jammed it a little bit and we've got to get through it."

Girardi said not playing Sunday and having the off-day Monday could be all the rest Solarte's shoulder needs.

After signing with the Yankees as a free agent in January, Solarte earned a spot on the Major League roster at the start of the season. Through 21 games, the 26-year-old is hitting .301 with one home run, 13 RBIs and a .400 on-base percentage.

• Infielder Brendan Ryan played in a rehab game with Class A Advanced Tampa on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. The shortstop has been on the disabled list since Spring Training with a cervical spinal nerve injury.

Jeter endorses adjustment of transfer rule

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter has been part of 1,372 double plays in his Major League career. You'd figure he knows what he's doing.

He did, until the transfer rule.

"It made it very uncomfortable to try to turn a double play," Jeter said on Friday.

Jeter applauded Major League Baseball's decision to clarify the rule, and in effect to return it to the way it was called before this season.

"I'm happy," Jeter said. "That was a tough one to enforce."

Until the rule was clarified on Friday, umpires (and replay officials) were ruling that a catch didn't count unless the player took the ball out of his glove cleanly.
 
"It sounds funny, but literally it was, 'Catch it, hold it, make sure you don't drop it [and then throw],'" Jeter said. "It appeared a lot of people were taking it step by step."

Yankees ready to send Ryan on rehab stint

NEW YORK -- Yankees infielder Brendan Ryan, on the disabled list since Spring Training with a cervical spinal nerve injury, is scheduled to begin a Minor League rehabilitation assignment on Sunday with Class A Advanced Tampa.
 
Ryan has been playing in extended spring games, so manager Joe Girardi said it shouldn't take him too long to be ready to join the Major League team. Girardi said he thinks Ryan has had about 20 at-bats in extended spring. The Yankees would like him to get about 50 before he returns, and they would also like to see him play on back-to-back days.
 
"I don't imagine it'll be too long," Girardi said.

With no reason to wait, Nova set for surgery

NEW YORK -- For Ivan Nova, the decision to have Tommy John surgery was fairly clear.
 
"I really had no choice," Nova said on Friday. "There's no reason to be wasting time."
 
The partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in Nova's right elbow was diagnosed after he left his start last Saturday against the Rays in St. Petersburg complaining of pain. The Yankees announced on Thursday that the right-hander will be having Tommy John surgery on Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala.
 
"It's hard, but I think it's the right way," Nova said.

Nuno eager to prove he can stick in rotation

NEW YORK -- Vidal Nuno, who is replacing the injured Ivan Nova in the Yankees' rotation, understands that he is getting a big chance to prove himself.
 
"It's a big step," said Nuno, who has made just four big league starts. "It's trying to stick, trying to produce and trying to get people out."
 
The 26-year-old Nuno pitched five scoreless innings against the Rays in St. Petersburg on Sunday, but at that point, it was just a spot start because the Yankees played a doubleheader earlier in the week and didn't want to pitch anyone else on short rest. This time, there's an actual spot in the rotation that has Nuno's name on it.
 
"It's nice to have a routine, to have regular bullpen sessions," Nuno said.
 
Nuno appreciates any opportunity he gets. The 48th-round Draft pick of the Indians in 2009 was never considered a big prospect.
 
One reason for that, Nuno said, is that he weighed only 145 pounds in high school, and his fastball topped out at 83 mph. The 5-foot-11 Nuno has steadily put on weight and strength since then, to the point that he now weighs 210 pounds and his fastball this season has averaged 88.7 mph, according to Fangraphs.

Bombers bits

• Girardi named David Phelps as the Yankees' starter for Wednesday's game against the Mariners. New York had to slot Phelps in for one game next week while Michael Pineda is serving his suspension for using a foreign substance.

• Ratings for Yankees games on the YES Network are up 38 percent from year to year, the network announced on Friday. Thursday's Yankees-Red Sox telecast averaged a 4.75 TV HH rating (467,000 total viewers) in the New York area, making it the second-highest-rated YES telecast this season, behind Masahiro Tanaka's April 4 Major League debut.

• Brian McCann became the sixth Yankees player to appear in a game at first base this year when he played there in the ninth inning of Thursday night's 14-5 win at Boston. It was the first time McCann had appeared in a professional game at any defensive position other than catcher, although he told Girardi he had played first base while in high school. McCann played two more innings at first in Friday's 13-1 loss.

• Brett Gardner's strange box-score line on Thursday (four runs scored, no hits) was a true Yankees rarity. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Gardner was just the second Yankee in history to score four runs in a game during which he didn't have a hit. It hadn't happened in 101 years, since Bert Daniels did it in 1913 in a game in Detroit. Various players from other teams have scored four runs without a hit since then, most recently Carlos Pena with the 2012 Rays.
