Yankees acquire McCarthy for Nuno

By Paul Casella / MLB.com | 7/6/2014 11:18 A.M. ET

The Yankees reached a deal with the D-backs to acquire right-hander Brandon McCarthy in exchange for southpaw Vidal Nuno on Sunday.

McCarthy, 30, joins the Yankees after going 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA over 18 starts with Arizona this season. He spent the first seven years of his career in the American League with the White Sox, Rangers and Athletics before joining the D-backs last year.

McCarthy has pitched reasonably well against the Yankees' AL East rivals, going 12-10 lifetime with a combined 3.90 ERA against the Red Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays and Rays. That record is his best mark against any of the three AL divisions.

As for Nuno, he departs New York after going 2-5 with a 5.42 ERA over 17 appearances (14 starts) in 2014. He also went 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA in five outings (three starts) in his debut season a year ago.

Jeter holds many fond memories of Minnesota

Written By limadu on Jumat, 04 Juli 2014 | 23.49

By Alex M. Smith / MLB.com | 7/4/2014 12:40 A.M. ET

MINNEAPOLIS -- Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is clearly not ready yet to say goodbye.

During his dugout press conference before Thursday's game at Target Field, a reporter uttered two words that Jeter took offense to.

"I don't like calling it a Farewell Tour," he said. "It's my last year, but we're still trying to win games. I have a job to do. So, I'm not just walking around shaking hands and taking pictures."

The Yankees are in town for the final regular-season series against the Twins in Jeter's storied career. He reminisced about loud playoff games at the now-demolished Metrodome, and showed a particular fondness for Minnesota's style of play.

"They had some great teams that we battled against the postseason," Jeter said. "I have the utmost respect for [Twins manager] Ron Gardenhire, playing against him and his teams."

While this weekend is New York's last regular-season visit to the "Mini Apple" in 2014, Jeter is expected to return to Target Field in 12 days for the 85th All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 15.

At last tally, Jeter led all American League shortstops with 2,924,686 votes, but he did not want to make any assumptions until Sunday, when the teams are announced.

"No All-Star teams have been selected, so I can't comment on that," the Yankees captain said.

The 14-time All-Star and future Hall-of-Famer eased up to at least discuss the possibility of playing in the game.

"All-Star Games are great," Jeter said. "I've always said that. It's not something I take for granted. I've been fortunate to play in quite a few of 'em. They're all unique. They're all special."

While Jeter couldn't think of anything in particular he'd remember about Minnesota off the field -- "I'm sort of a homebody right now," he said. -- the shortstop recalled his time against the Twins fondly.

For the most part, though, Jeter was more interested in talking about the future than the past.

"I have a competition problem," he said. "I like to compete. I like to win."

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com -- online or on a mobile device -- using the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot Sponsored by Experian until tonight at 10:59 p.m. CT. The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15 on FOX.

Sabathia's swollen right knee prompts MRI

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Yankees received some bad news on Thursday.

After a workout the day before, lefty ace CC Sabathia woke up on Thursday morning with swelling in his right knee, and he underwent an MRI.

"I can't tell you how long he's gonna be shut down," manager Joe Girardi said. "We're going to talk to Dr. [Chris] Ahmad and Dr. [James] Andrews over the next couple hours, and we're going to figure out what's next."

New York was hoping that Sabathia -- who made his last Major League start on May 10 and had a 3 2/3-inning rehab start for Double-A Trenton on Wednesday -- would be able to help the Yanks make a playoff push.

"We were hopeful that the swelling would stay away and he would be in our rotation very soon," Girardi said.

With no timetable for Sabathia's return, would the Yankees think about trading for another starting pitcher?

"I don't think our organization's thinking ever changes," Girardi said. "I think they're always looking to better our team, no matter what. When someone's injured, you can never count 100 percent that they're coming back."

Wheeler has blast with homer in MLB debut

MINNEAPOLIS -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Dave Miley pulled Zelous Wheeler out of the on-deck circle on Wednesday.

"Come here," Miley said. "Somebody else is going to hit for you."

Once the confused Wheeler was off the field, the manager broke some unexpected news: The Yankees needed him to catch a flight to Minneapolis.

Wheeler skipped the second game of Scranton's doubleheader and gave his mother, Laverne, and the rest of his family a call he's been waiting to make since being selected by the Brewers in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

"She screamed," Wheeler said. "They're excited. They were jumping up and down."

On Thursday night, Wheeler made his Major League debut. Starting at third base and batting eighth in the lineup, he belted a home run off Twins starter Phil Hughes in the fifth inning, a 413-foot smash into the Yankees' bullpen for his first career hit.

"I got a pitch over [the plate], elevated up and put good wood on it," said Wheeler, who went 2-for-4 and added a seventh-inning single in the Yanks' 7-4 win. "I was like 'Wow, I really hit a home run!'"

Wheeler's blast followed Carlos Beltran's three-run shot in a four-run fifth that erased New York's 2-0 deficit.

"It's a special night for him," manager Joe Girardi said. "Obviously, he's a part of the win. A big part. He gets a tack-on run to make it 4-2, and then he's a part of that rally."

Wheeler replaced Yangervis Solarte, who was optioned to Triple-A following Wednesday's 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay.

"He's been struggling in the month of June," Girardi said. "We thought we'd send him down to get him going.

"We made it known to him: Hey, you were a big part of our success in the first two months, then you struggled, so go get back on track."

Until then, Wheeler could be the answer on the 25-man roster.

In a span of hours, Wheeler went from taking in the pregame sights at Target Field to contributing to a big win in his first career start.

"It felt great," he said. "I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. Hopefully, I can take advantage of it."

Gehrig delivered a declaration of inspiration

The distinctive sentence structure and New England accent stay with us 54 years after JFK delivered, "Ask not what your country can do for you ..." And most grammar-school students can identify the words, "Four score and seven years ago" even though such time-telling phrasing has been gone for seven score and 11 years. Every January we embrace the "I have a dream" speech Martin Luther King Jr. delivered in 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial. And though we have endured too many subsequent days of infamy, we readily recall the one so designated by FDR in 1941.

We love speeches, don't we? Give us a good one, and we'll hang on to it for decades. Our kids will memorize it, our candidates will steal from it, our comics will distort it. And some folks might change their thinking because of it. But no one will forget it.

A great speech has a life expectancy comparable to that of the Himalayas. And it can move mountains.

A nation that is sitcom-obsessed and routinely finds humor -- of the gallows variety -- in tragedy will warm up to a heart attack-serious speech and salute the man at the microphone for decades. The written word has power and sway. The spoken word, to use a baseball term, has pop.

The speeches we embrace most fervently are powerful, persuasive and, in many cases, presidential. In all cases, they are political -- except the one delivered 75 years ago today on a baseball diamond in the South Bronx. Lou Gehrig was apolitical, as far as we know. He wasn't the president of anything.

On July 4, 1939, however, he made history with words that still resonate as if they redirected the course the country would follow. That he delivered his speech on the nation's birthday was as appropriate as his fate was ironic. The man who appeared in 2,130 consecutive games, a man renowned and respected for his durability, would be felled before his 40th birthday.

His speech was a declaration of inspiration.

The farewell speech of the great first baseman-slugger, the Yankees' first captain, the almost instant Hall of Famer and revered Iron Horse was brief, 275 words, but as powerful as anything Gehrig did with a bat in his hands.

He found a glimmer of good in a winding-down experience that many Americans considered profoundly sad and tragic. And he emphasized how fortunate and grateful he was. He had been stricken by a disease that would end his life nearly two years after he spoke that day at Yankee Stadium, 17 days short of what would have been his 38th birthday.

And though his already compromised body merely hinted at his weakness -- a once-strapping body slumped slightly as he spoke, and he was unable to hold the gifts bestowed on him that day -- his words provided only a veiled reference to the dreadful disease that took his life, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Much of what Gehrig said that day seldom is heard these days. We know best the thoughts that have been spliced together by the first people who favored soundbites more than whole thoughts.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

And ...

"I might have had a tough break -- but I have an awful lot to live for."

The in-between follows: "I have been in ballparks for 17 years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.

"Look at these grand men [the teammates and colleagues gathered around him]. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career to associate with them for even one day?

"Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert -- also the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow -- to have spent the next nine years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins -- then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology -- the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy.

"Sure, I'm lucky. When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift, that's something! When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies, that's something.

"When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles against her own daughter, that's something. When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body, it's a blessing! When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that's the finest I know."

"So I close in saying that ..."

Batting-cage parlance has given us this wonderful salute to elite sluggers: "When he hits it, it stays hit." It applies to pitches struck by the likes of Gehrig, Frank Howard, Mickey Mantle, Gary Sheffield, Mike Piazza, Willie McCovey and Dave Kingman. Gehrig is the one whose words reached our upper deck, whose thoughts have had exceptional hang time. His speech of 75 years ago today includes the most memorable and hallowed words in baseball history.

And that's saying a lot.

Prospect Severino fires six scoreless for Tampa

By Teddy Cahill / MLB.com | 7/4/2014 1:00 A.M. ET

Right-hander Luis Severino, the Yankees' No. 9 prospect, according to MLB.com, threw six scoreless innings on Thursday in Class A Advanced Tampa's 4-3 win over Lakeland.

Severino struck out six batters, walked two and gave up two hits. He has thrown back-to-back shutout outings after throwing six hitless innings against Clearwater last week.

Severino began the season with Class A Charleston and was promoted to Tampa at the All-Star break last month. In 17 starts between the two levels, he is 4-3 with a 2.56 ERA. He has 90 strikeouts and 19 walks in 84 1/3 innings.

Severino is a native of the Dominican Republic and will pitch for the World team in the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game at Target Field.

Outfielder Aaron Judge, the Yanks' No. 8 prospect, hit a three-run home run on Thursday to lead Tampa's offense. He has homered in three straight games and finished 1-for-2 with two runs, two walks and three RBIs.

Like Severino, Judge began the season in Charleston. In 13 games since his promotion, Judge is hitting .302/.474/.651 with three home runs.

Yankees promote infielder Wheeler from Triple-A

Written By limadu on Kamis, 03 Juli 2014 | 23.49

By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com | 7/3/2014 11:58 A.M. ET

The Yankees made a move with their infield depth on Thursday, when they signed Zelous Wheeler to a big league contract and selected him to the 25-man roster. Wheeler will replace Yangervis Solarte, who was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Wednesday's game.

Wheeler, 27 years old, is batting .299 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre through 66 games this season, and he's been a .274 hitter over the course of his eight-year Minor League career. Wheeler is primarily a third baseman, but he has also seen time at second base, shortstop and right field this season.

Solarte has hit .260 with a .343 on-base percentage and six home runs for the Yankees this season, but he hit .164 over 20 games in June. The Yankees had to designate veteran infielder Dean Anna for assignment in order to make room for Wheeler on the 40-man roster.

Sabathia feels good after second rehab outing

By Austin Laymance / MLB.com | 7/2/2014 10:22 P.M. ET

TRENTON, N.J. -- CC Sabathia admits it's been tough to watch the Yankees play while he recovers from a right knee injury that has kept him on the disabled list since May 11, but the left-hander is getting closer to returning to a big league mound.

Sabathia said he felt good physically after his second Minor League rehab start on Wednesday and is on track in his progression from right knee inflammation. He made 55 pitches over 3 2/3 innings with Double-A Trenton against the Portland Sea Dogs, an increase from a 37-pitch outing on Saturday with Class A Advanced Tampa.

He was charged with five runs (three earned) on five hits. Sabathia struck out two, walked one and hit a batter. His fastball sat at 90-91 mph and he reached 94 mph in the first inning.

"I felt good. The secondary pitches weren't that good, but my fastball I felt was coming off pretty good," Sabathia said. "I feel good health-wise, so I'll be ready to go."

Sabathia said he did not know what his next step would be, though another rehab start appears likely. He's still building arm strength and working on his command.

"I need to work on my secondary pitches a little more," Sabathia said. "Changeup was cutting, slider wasn't as sharp as I wanted it to be, so we'll do some work on those things. But overall, I felt pretty good."

Sabathia said he's more concerned with how he feels at this point as opposed to results.

"Results, I guess, will come when they matter," he said. "Right now, I'm just trying to make sure that I can give max effort out there and not feel anything and be healthy."

After retiring the first batter he faced, Sabathia allowed a single through the left side of the infield and a double down the third-base line. He then got a pair of flyouts to center field to end the frame, one of which scored a run.

Sabathia recorded two flyouts to open the second, and he then hit a left-handed batter with a pitch. He got a ground ball to third to end the inning. In the third, Sabathia allowed a leadoff triple, walked the next batter then allowed a hard-hit double to straightaway center. He responded with a strikeout before making a nice barehand play on a chopper back to the mound for the third out. It was the only time Sabathia's knee was tested in the field.

With his pitch count at 43, Sabathia returned for the fourth inning. He faced four batters, striking out one. Not long after Trenton manager Tony Franklin removed Sabathia from the game, a heavy downpour started and a rain delay ensued.

"Perfect timing, perfect timing," Sabathia said with a smile. "I really wanted to face the hitters and not have to finish it up in the bullpen or on the side. So that was a good thing."

But watching the Yankees struggle to keep pace in the American League East race has not been a pleasant experience for Sabathia, who is itching to get back on the field and contribute.

"It's been tough to watch, man," he said. "We've been just trying to grind. But it's always hard when you're not there. It's hard to watch on TV, it's hard to listen to, so hopefully I can get back as soon as possible and start helping the guys."

Cashman ready to navigate trade market

Written By limadu on Selasa, 01 Juli 2014 | 23.49

NEW YORK -- The July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline is still about a month away, but Yankees general manager Brian Cashman does not want to wait.

"I'm ready to rock and roll," Cashman said prior to Monday's game against the Rays. "But again, I think those who have [trade pieces] are taking their time. Certain pieces, it's been communicated that if they get what they want, which would be an extreme haul, they're ready to move sooner than later."

Cashman's comments reiterated his point from Saturday that he was actively trying to improve the Yankees, and the reason the team has not executed a trade yet is "not because a lack of phone calls."

Monday's game against the Rays is the Yankees' 81st game this season, officially the halfway point in the schedule. The Yankees (41-39), two games out of first place in the American League East, were tied with the Blue Jays and Orioles in the loss column entering Monday.

"We're fortunate to be two games out with poor performance and injuries," Cashman said.

That has especially hindered the starting rotation. Ivan Nova was lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Michael Pineda is not projected back until sometime in August and CC Sabathia just completed his first Minor League rehab start and is expected to return in the next few weeks.

And their replacements in the rotation have offered mostly mixed results. Vidal Nuno is 2-4 with a 5.42 ERA, David Phelps was 3-4 with a 4.35 ERA entering Monday and rookie Chase Whitley has dropped his last two starts, allowing 13 runs in his last 7 1/3 innings.

Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija and Rays left-hander David Price, who is scheduled to start against the Yankees on Tuesday, are two of the top targets around the Majors, but both teams are expected to have a high asking price in exchange. Other starters such as Jason Hammel (Cubs), Cliff Lee (Phillies) and Ian Kennedy (Padres) are expected to be more in the Yankees' price range.

"I just think it's always difficult to acquire anything that's impactful and significant," Cashman said. "Those are tough conversations to have, and they usually hurt a great deal to do so. That's my experience and it seems like it gets harder, rather than easier. But you've got to go through it. You've got to figure it out and find a way if you can run into something that's going to impact you."

Asked if other clubs have been requesting right-hander Dellin Betances in trade talks, the GM declined to comment, but added: "I wouldn't say who gets asked a lot about. But I do know that we have personnel that are very attractive to other clubs -- personnel that I typically wouldn't want to part with. But we'll go through the walk and see where it takes me."

CC to make next rehab start at Double-A on Thursday

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia is scheduled throw around 50 pitches during his next Minor League rehabilitation start for Double-A Trenton against Portland on Thursday.

Sabathia, who has been sidelined since May 11 with fluid and inflammation in his right knee, made his first rehab start for Class A Advanced Tampa on Saturday, when he threw 37 pitches and said he "could not have been happier with the way he felt physically."

The Yankees still have not determined the number of starts Sabathia will need before he returns to the Majors.

"We'll just take it one step at a time. Obviously, we have to maintain health and extend that pitch count," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "He's only at 37 pitches right now, so he's going to build up to around 50 and then just keep going from there. Hopefully, he's on the horizon."

Cashman watched video from Sabathia's outing and said he was especially pleased with the way Sabathia moved around covering first base.

"That was noticeable, more so than anything else," Cashman said. "You're looking at if the knee's bothering him or what have you, and at least in that outing, he looked like he was jumping around pretty athletic and he looked healthy."

Bombers bits

Since returning from the disabled list with a strained lumbar spine on June 12, Shawn Kelley has struggled for the Yankees. He was brought into the game in the fifth inning against the Red Sox on Sunday, and he walked two, allowed a hit and didn't record an out. He was eventually charged for two runs and said he was a little out of sync mechanically.

"Still got a few things to continue to get better at, as far as getting my leg strength back and arm strength," Kelley said. "I'm ready, I feel good. I can help this team and I can get outs. Yesterday didn't go as planned, but I'm back physically to where I need to be to be successful."
