The Yankees made a move with their infield depth on Thursday, when they signed Zelous Wheeler to a big league contract and selected him to the 25-man roster. Wheeler will replace Yangervis Solarte, who was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Wednesday's game.
Wheeler, 27 years old, is batting .299 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre through 66 games this season, and he's been a .274 hitter over the course of his eight-year Minor League career. Wheeler is primarily a third baseman, but he has also seen time at second base, shortstop and right field this season.
Solarte has hit .260 with a .343 on-base percentage and six home runs for the Yankees this season, but he hit .164 over 20 games in June. The Yankees had to designate veteran infielder Dean Anna for assignment in order to make room for Wheeler on the 40-man roster.
