Girardi in no rush to name Yankees' closer

TAMPA, Fla. -- Right-hander Dellin Betances and lefty Andrew Miller each pitched an inning during the split-squad Yankees' 4-1 win over the Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Don't expect to see the word "closer" before either of their names anytime soon.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Saturday morning he doesn't expect to decide on the Yankees' late-inning bullpen order until near the end of Spring Training, so the "Betances or Miller?" debate will continue.

"I think it's affected by possibly losing someone out of your bullpen to a starting role. That changes things. So we've got to figure that out first, then we put the rest of it together," Girardi said. "I won't make that decision until really late, because to me, that's not one of my pressing decisions."

Girardi said a more pressing decision is finding a fifth starter. That could turn out to be Adam Warren, which would impact the bullpen composition, but Girardi said it's not fair to even evaluate how the rotation candidates look at this point of the spring schedule.

Betances gave up two hits, a run and also balked during the fourth inning Saturday. Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson said Betances was "just off a little bit" and leaving a few pitches up in the zone.

Miller struck out two in a perfect fifth inning.

Around the horn
• Reliever Andrew Bailey faced five hitters in a simulated game Saturday morning, throwing 18 pitches and striking out one batter. Bailey said he threw all of his pitches and hopes to get into a game soon, though he doesn't know his next step.

Bailey underwent shoulder surgery on July 24, 2013, and he has experienced a number of setbacks in his recovery.

"I haven't felt this good in quite some time," Bailey said.

• Top prospect Luis Severino threw a 32-pitch bullpen Saturday morning, his first time pitching off the mound since he was diagnosed with strep throat on Monday.

• CC Sabathia, scheduled to start Tuesday, threw 35 pitches in the bullpen Saturday morning.

• Infielder Brendan Ryan (back) is "making progress," Girardi said, and the Yankees hope to have him game-ready by the end of next week. "We need to get him in there," Girardi said.
