TAMPA, Fla. -- Alex Rodriguez is in the Yankees' lineup at third base for Sunday's game against the Nationals, marking his first defensive appearance of the year.
Rodriguez, 39, has said he feels ready to play the field after serving as the Yanks' designated hitter twice this spring. He is 1-for-4 with two walks and a single. He has been taking grounders at third base and first base in workouts.
"I like to play the game, so anything [manager] Joe [Girardi] wants me to do, I'm fine with," Rodriguez said after Friday's game, a 3-1 Yankees loss to the Pirates. "But my focus right now is just to get as many at-bats as possible. Timing is everything right now."
This will mark Rodriguez's first appearance at third base since Sept. 10, 2013, a 7-5 victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards. He started that day and went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Girardi has said that he is encouraged by A-Rod's progress thus far this spring.
"[The most encouraging thing] is that his body has been responding every day," Girardi said. "I'm curious to see how he's going to respond. I haven't had to give him more days off. He's been ready to go every time he's been called upon."
