Pentland, 68, has a lengthy Major League resume and was the Marlins' hitting coordinator last year. He has worked as a hitting coach for five big league teams: the Marlins (1996), Cubs (1997-2002), Royals (2003-05), Mariners (2005-08) and Dodgers (2010-11).
Pentland has several connections to the Yankees' staff, serving as the Cubs' hitting coach during Joe Girardi's playing days. Pentland also worked alongside pitching coach Larry Rothschild in Chicago and under bench coach Tony Pena when Pena was managing Kansas City.
It has become more common in recent years for teams to employ assistant hitting coaches. Cockrell was the Mariners' hitting coach for parts of two seasons in 2009-10 and held the same position with the Rockies in the two seasons prior to his stint in Seattle.
"Talking to the opposing teams that do have it, [an assistant hitting coach] is work relief for the head guy," general manager Brian Cashman said in November. "It frees the head guy up to focus on a lot of different things.
"The second chair can pick up some of the tedious slack that builds up from advanced scouting, make sure the cage is covered when the main guy is out on the field and can't be two places at the same time. It's just a coverage issue."
Cockrell, 52, played 13 professional seasons as an outfielder, making it to the Majors with the Rockies in 1996. He has previously worked as a hitting coach with the Rockies (2007-08) and Mariners (2009-10).
Espada, 39, most recently was a special assistant to Cashman and has also been a third-base coach with the Marlins. The hirings were first reported by YES Network.
In making their selections, the Yankees passed on former big league infielder, coach and manager Willie Randolph, who interviewed in November for the position that will be filled by Espada.
The Yanks interviewed Chili Davis and Dave Magadan for the hitting-coach job; Davis chose to go to the Red Sox and Magadan was turned down, instead remaining with the Rangers. New York also considered James Rowson, its Minor League hitting coordinator, as an internal candidate for one of the hitting-coach positions.
Girardi's coaching staff will be rounded out by Rothschild, Pena, third-base coach Rob Thomson and bullpen coach Gary Tuck, all of whom are returning.
