Yankees refute report of plans to retire No. 2 on Sunday

The Yankees have announced some of their plans for Sunday's ceremony, which will precede the scheduled 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Royals. The team will begin wearing patches depicting Jeter's final season logo on the left sleeve of its uniform and cap.

The patches will be worn for the final 22 games of the regular season. Former teammates, family members and other guests are expected to take part in the ceremony highlighting Jeter's career, and fans are encouraged to be in their seats by noon.

With the Yankees' retirement of No. 6 earlier this year for former manager Joe Torre, Jeter's No. 2 is the lone remaining single uniform digit in circulation and a certainty to be retired at some point in the future.

Earlier this season, Jeter reflected on how the number was issued to him.

"I didn't choose it. I was just given it," Jeter said. "I assume that was because it was the smallest jersey at the time. I think [infielder Mike] Gallego had No. 2 before me. It was probably the only one that fit me. So, no, I didn't choose it."
