SEATTLE -- The Yankees' bullpen, a strength of their roster all season long, received reinforcements on Wednesday as right-hander Shawn Kelley was activated from the disabled list and left-hander David Huff was acquired from the Giants.
Kelley has not pitched in a big league game since May 6 due to a lumbar spine strain, but had no further issues in a pair of Minor League rehab assignments. Huff, who was with the Yankees last season, was obtained in exchange for cash considerations.
To create room for Kelley on the active roster, right-hander Matt Daley was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Manager Joe Girardi said that they chose to keep right-hander Jose Ramirez instead of Daley because Ramirez offers more distance.
Left-hander Wade LeBlanc was designated for assignment to clear space for Huff, who was 1-0 with a 6.30 ERA in 16 appearances for San Francisco this season and will be used as a multi-inning reliever who can offer about 45 pitches.
"He did a good job for us last year -- he really did, so he's back," Girardi said. "We're familiar with him."
Kelley opened the season as the Yankees' primary eighth-inning relief option and will rejoin that mix, which has been handled more recently by Dellin Betances and Adam Warren.
"Obviously, there's nobody in this game who's better at coming in as the fireman like Dellin is, so I don't think anything is going to change about that," Kelley said.
Girardi's plan is to use them all for important innings in getting the ball to closer David Robertson.
"It just gives me more versatility; gives me another late-inning guy with the two that we've had, that we've been using a lot," Girardi said. "I think all these guys are interchangeable. It gives us more depth."
Beltran feels 'good' after first throwing session
SEATTLE -- Carlos Beltran seemed to be amused by the attention being paid to his brief throwing session on Wednesday at Safeco Field, the first time he has aired out his right arm since being sidelined with a bone spur last month.
"I think everything went well; just 25 throws at 90 feet -- I think you can do that, too," Beltran told a group of reporters crowded around his locker in the visiting clubhouse.
It was a fair point, but this represents a measure of progress for Beltran, who will be used as a designated hitter for the foreseeable future but hopes to return to playing the outfield later in the season.
Beltran acknowledged that it will take time for him to build back up to that goal, but he felt no discomfort. Beltran was wearing a brace to prevent him from hyperextending his elbow again, and he said that the brace did not affect him.
"Not really; at 90 feet, I feel like I was making pretty good throws," Beltran said. "My shoulder wasn't tight or anything like it. I feel good."
Betances: Tough outing is learning experience
SEATTLE -- As disappointed as Dellin Betances was to watch Dustin Ackley's game-tying line drive find some outfield grass in Tuesday's 3-2 Yankees win, the right-hander said that he can use the outing as something to build on.
"This is what makes you a better pitcher, games like these," Betances said. "You never want to give up the lead, but games like these always help you the next time out. I felt great. I was off a little mechanically, working side to side, but I was glad I was able to keep the game tied and give us a chance."
The Mariners evened the score in the seventh as Betances hit Mike Zunino, uncorked a wild pitch and then allowed a hit to Ackley that eluded Brian Roberts' leaping stab at second base by a few inches.
Betances recovered after an infield hit to strike out Willie Bloomquist, ending the inning, and Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he has seen flashes of growing maturity from the 25-year-old.
"I think what you've seen is, if he does happen to give up a run, he's able to stop it there and it doesn't snowball," Girardi said. "If he's struggling a little bit with his command, he finds it quicker than maybe he used to."
Bombers bits
• Jacoby Ellsbury's RBI single Wednesday extended his hitting streak to 15 games, marking the longest active streak in the Majors and the fourth longest in the American League this season.
• On this date in 2003, six Astros pitchers -- Roy Oswalt, Peter Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner -- combine on a no-hitter as the Astros blank the Yankees, 8-0, at Yankee Stadium. It marked the first time that the Yankees had been no-hit at home since 1952, when the Tigers' Virgil Trucks accomplished the feat.
