Beltran gets break from starting lineup vs. A's

OAKLAND -- Carlos Beltran has been searching for his timing since being activated from the disabled list, with just four hits in 31 at-bats (.129), and he was held out of the Yankees' lineup on Saturday.

"I don't feel good right now, man," Beltran said. "It feels like some days I feel better, then the next day, back to not feeling good. It has to come. I just need to stick with the plan and continue to go to the cage and work on the things I have always worked. It's got to come."

Beltran went hitless in five at-bats on Friday. He missed 21 games with a bone spur in his right elbow, returning to action on June 5.

"He's fighting through it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's had some productive hits for us. You look at the ball he hits [in the eighth inning] last night -- if it's a day game, it's probably a home run here.

"But we talked about it. It could take some time to get his timing going. And he's played every day since he's been back, so I figured just give him a day, and I think he'll continue to get better."

Beltran said that he still has to work on occasional tightness in his elbow, but there is no pain, and the brace that he is wearing has not bothered him.

"Every day is getting better. I still have to come here, get treatment and try to make everything loose and continue," Beltran said.

Beltran said that he would use Saturday for some extra batting practice. He also continued throwing, making 25 tosses at 60 feet and 25 more at 90 feet.

Tight rib cage sidelines Teixeira in Oakland

OAKLAND -- Mark Teixeira was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Athletics with left rib cage tightness, but the injury is not thought to be serious and the Yankees' first baseman could play in Sunday's series finale.

The lineup change was announced 25 minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch at O.co Coliseum. Brian McCann moved to first base, with John Ryan Murphy inserted as the starting catcher.

Teixeira said that the discomfort felt like a spasm, locking up his back below the left shoulder. He was certain that the injury was not to his oblique, an area that often necessitates a stint on the disabled list.

"It's the back. It's not an oblique," Teixeira said. "I've pulled an oblique before, and it's not that. It wasn't on one swing. I woke up this morning, it was tight and it just slowly got worse."

Teixeira went through a full batting practice but was unable to play. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he is hopeful that Teixeira will be able to play on Sunday.

"He was a little tight before he went out for BP. When he came in he said he was a little bit tighter," Girardi said. "We decided it was probably best not to play him."

Teixeira was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a sacrifice fly in the Yankees' 7-0 victory over the A's on Friday. He sat out three games in late May with right wrist inflammation, and has batted .235 (8-for-34) with two home runs in 10 games since then.

For the season, Teixeira is batting .241 with a team-leading 11 home runs and 31 RBIs.

Yankees sign top 2014 Draft pick Lindgren

OAKLAND -- The Yankees announced on Saturday that they have signed left-hander Jacob Lindgren, their first selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.

A hard-throwing junior at Mississippi State, Lindgren was selected in the second round, 55th overall. He was ranked by MLB.com to be the No. 41 prospect entering the Draft, and he has been touted as one of the nastiest relievers in college ball.

Lindgren signed for $1.1 million, according to the New York Post, slightly above the recommended slot bonus of $1,018,700. Lindgren is expected to begin his professional career with either Class A Charleston or Short-Season Class A Staten Island.

In 26 appearances this season for the Bulldogs, the 21-year-old Lindgren was 6-1 with three saves and a team-leading 0.81 ERA. He ranked first among all relievers nationally with 100 strikeouts, leading the nation with 16.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lindgren recently said that his pitching style has been compared to that of former Yankee and current Tigers reliever Phil Coke.

During MLB Network's coverage of the Draft, it was mentioned that Lindgren could be the first member of this class to make it to the Majors. Lindgren said that he didn't hear that comment because he was celebrating, but word of it has trickled back to him.

"I think that's pretty cool that people think that, but making it to the big leagues is not easy," Lindgren said. "It's going to take hard work. I have to keep developing my game and getting better one day at a time. If the Yankees think it's my time to go up, I'm ready for it."

The Yankees also announced the signings of: right-hander Austin DeCarr (third round), right-hander Jordan Foley (fifth round), right-hander Jonathan Holder (sixth round), left-hander Derek Callahan (16th round), right-hander Corey Holmes (20th round) and right-hander Lee Casas (28th round).

New York also signed post-Draft free agent right-hander Michael Noteware from Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho.

Yanks to try to let Roberts rest banged-up knee

OAKLAND -- The Yankees will try to give Brian Roberts the rest of the weekend off after the infielder fouled a ball off his right knee in Friday's 7-0 victory over the Athletics.

Roberts said that he could have been in the lineup on Saturday, but manager Joe Girardi decided to hold him out. Roberts has hit his knee twice in recent games and said that the knee is bruised but not swollen.

"I told him I could play," Roberts said. "[Am I] sore? Yeah. But do you ever have a day you're not sore?"

"He's available, but he's hit a ball off that knee a couple times," Girardi said. "It's kind of sore, so I'm thinking I'll get him [rest] today and tomorrow and see if we can kind of clear it up."

With Roberts on the bench, Yangervis Solarte moved to second base and Kelly Johnson got his second straight start at third base. Solarte got the day off on Friday after going 0-for-11 in the series against the Mariners in Seattle.

"I think it will help [Solarte]," Girardi said. "I think a lot of times when you're struggling, guys can benefit from an off-day, when they can turn their mind off a little bit and just relax and regroup and get a little more energy."

Bombers bits

• The Yankees had some laughs at Brendan Ryan's expense after the infielder crumpled to the ground after being hit in the elbow by a breaking ball in the ninth inning of Friday's 7-0 win over the A's. Ryan stayed in the game and X-rays were negative.

"I know I'm going to be subject to a lot of flak from the guys, I'm sure. Deservedly so," Ryan said. "It hit the funny bone. My fingers curled up. I couldn't move my fingers, and the whole thing was like on fire.

"It's just embarrassing it was on a curveball, you know? I don't think I've ever reacted like that to a breaking ball."

• Saturday marks right-hander Chase Whitley's 25th birthday.

• On this date in 1953, the Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Indians at Cleveland Stadium, giving them their 17th and 18th consecutive victories. It was also the Yanks' 14th and 15th straight road wins, setting a franchise record that still stands today.
