The Yankees shut down ace CC Sabathia for the season Monday after it was determined that the left-hander sustained a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring during his last start.
According to the team, the recovery time for such an injury is approximately eight weeks. The Yankees have been mathematically eliminated from the American League East race and enter Monday four games back of the Indians for the second AL Wild Card spot with six games remaining on their schedule.
Sabathia, 33, is a six-time All-Star and won the 2006 AL Cy Young Award with the Indians. He averaged 18.5 wins per season over his first four years with the Yankees, and while he's won 14 games this season, his ERA of 4.78 is the highest of his 13-season career.
Sabathia won his Friday start against the Giants, in which he was injured, allowing just one earned run while scattering seven hits over seven innings.
