BOSTON -- Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez was forced to leave Sunday's 9-6 victory over the Red Sox with a tight right hamstring and is expected to be re-evaluated in New York on Monday.

Nunez suffered the injury while sliding feet first back into first base in the sixth inning, retreating to the bag after smacking a ball off the Green Monster in left field.

"It was tight before, but on that play, I felt it more," Nunez said. "It's fine. I'll play Tuesday, I hope."

Nunez was replaced by Jayson Nix as a pinch-runner, and Nix stayed in the game to play shortstop. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he would expect Nunez to have an MRI when the team returns to New York.

"I don't think it's something real, real serious, but could it be a Grade 1 [strain]? I guess," Girardi said. "We're not going to know for a couple of days."
