SAN DIEGO -- Derek Jeter will not appear in the Yankees' starting lineup until at least Monday, as the captain hopes an achy right calf and leg will calm down enough to permit him to avoid the disabled list.

Manager Joe Girardi said that Jeter has been dealing with lower-body issues since Monday, after the Yankees arrived in Los Angeles to prepare for a two-game series with the Dodgers. Jeter played shortstop in both of those games.

"He's been battling this leg problem. He's also battling a little calf problem," Girardi said. "I'm going to give him the next two days off, see where we're at on Monday, hopefully get him back in there on Monday."

Girardi said that he did not know if Jeter's newest injury is related to the Grade 1 quadriceps strain that sent him to the disabled list last month. Jeter was receiving treatment and did not speak to reporters before Saturday's game.

"He played on Sunday, and Sunday he did not feel anything," Girardi said. "It was when he woke up on Monday that he talked about he felt a little something there.

"Today, he said it's the best it's felt in the few days. He thought it was better, but if it is going in the right direction, I want to keep him going in the right direction and get him back 100 percent."

The Yankees have been proceeding cautiously with Jeter, who has been limited to just five big league games this season. Jeter said in Los Angeles that he has been hearing "little whispers coming in my head immediately" telling him not to run full speed on ground balls.

"It's hard. It's difficult, but I try to look at the big picture," Jeter said then. "I'm trying to do what I'm told. I don't want to do anything stupid, but it's very difficult when your natural reaction is to run as hard as you can and you can't. It's difficult, but that won't last long."

Girardi said that he might use Jeter as a pinch-hitter against the Padres, but that he would probably have to pinch-run for him if he got on base. Having the designated hitter back in play on Monday against the White Sox in Chicago could help Jeter's case to avoid a third stint on the disabled list this season.

"I'm definitely giving it two days. My hope is that we don't have to DL him," Girardi said. "My goal is to get him back in there on Monday, get him in there against the White Sox and see how he does. ... Jeet is as tough as it gets. He's going to try to push through everything he can push through."

Phelps scratched from Double-A start with sore elbow

SAN DIEGO -- Yankees right-hander David Phelps has a sore pitching elbow and has been scratched from his scheduled rehab start for Double-A Trenton on Sunday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Phelps, who has been on the disabled list with a right forearm strain, told him that he is still experiencing some issues.

"I talked to him today to make sure that he was feeling OK and he said he didn't quite feel 100 percent," Girardi said. "I said, 'Look, this isn't something we want to mess with, so let's take a step back, get you evaluated and see where you're at.'"

Girardi said that he expects Phelps to have tests performed on the forearm. Phelps is 6-5 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 games (12 starts) for New York this season, and the Yankees had been expected to reinstall him either in their rotation or bullpen shortly.

"He just said it didn't feel 100 percent," Girardi said. "For a player to say that, we just said, 'You know what? You're not going to pitch.'"

Girardi ready to play A-Rod on Monday if available

SAN DIEGO -- If Alex Rodriguez should appear in the visiting clubhouse on Monday at U.S. Cellular Field, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he is ready to write the embattled third baseman's name in the lineup.

"We've said a number of times, maybe Monday," Girardi said. "Nothing has changed since yesterday."

Rodriguez is scheduled to play another Minor League rehabilitation game on Saturday for Double-A Trenton, which will be his 15th game in the Minors this year overall.

After that, the Yankees are proceeding as though Rodriguez could join them in Chicago on Monday. It has been widely reported that Major League Baseball is planning to hand Rodriguez a substantial suspension, but nothing has yet been announced.

"I heard it was going to be this week; I heard it was going to be on Thursday," Girardi said. "Deadlines aren't deadlines until someone actually pulls the plug here and says something. They say it's going to be Monday. I don't know. Our goal is to have him here on Monday."

Girardi had little reaction to Rodriguez's postgame comments on Friday, in which he told reporters, "There's more than one party that benefits from me not ever stepping back on the field. That's not my teammates and it's not the Yankee fans."

"My goal is to get him back here as a player for us," Girardi said. "That's my goal. I manage the players in the clubhouse. That's my job. My goal is to get him back. I hope we have him back on Monday."

Girardi said there was no chance Rodriguez, who homered for Trenton on Friday, would be in San Diego for Sunday's 4:10 p.m. ET game against the Padres.

"I don't think we can get a fighter jet to get him here in an hour or two. I don't think that's going to happen," Girardi said.

Bombers bits

• Jeter has 3,308 career hits, placing him five hits shy of tying Eddie Collins (3,313) for ninth place on baseball's all-time list. Jeter is also 11 hits away from tying Paul Molitor (3,319) for eighth place all time.

• On this date in 1959, Yogi Berra connected for his first and only All-Star Game home run, taking the Dodgers' Don Drysdale deep in a 5-3 American League win at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
