BOSTON -- Brent Lillibridge keeps a couple of old New York tabloid covers on display in his home, reminders of the April 2011 game in which he made two terrific catches to thwart a Yankees rally and help the White Sox hang on for a victory.
Now Lillibridge is hoping that he can give the Yankees a hand. He was selected from the Yankees' Triple-A roster on Friday, slotting into the lineup batting seventh and playing third base at Fenway Park.
"I'm excited just to be up here," Lillibridge said. "It was a long time to be in the Minor Leagues this season, always questioning whether you're going to get the opportunity again. I'm getting the opportunity and hoping to take advantage of it."
Lillibridge, 29, was acquired from the Cubs on June 21 in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. In 23 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Lillibridge hit .341 (28-for-82) with 18 runs scored, seven doubles, seven homers and 15 RBIs.
"He's a guy who can play everywhere, been really swinging the bat in Triple-A," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We'll take a look at him and see how he does. I think he's played everywhere but catcher this year, and I won't put him there -- he won't have to worry about it."
Lillibridge remembered accurately that he robbed both Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano with his game-saving catches on April 26, 2011, in New York, playing right field after entering the game as an eighth-inning pinch-runner and preserving a 3-2 win for the White Sox.
"Hopefully it was early enough in the season that no one held too much of a grudge," Lillibridge said. "It was a fun time, really. I was pretty jacked up, and so was the team. It was a fun experience, I'll never forget it."
Cano has no issues after All-Star Game plunking
BOSTON -- There was obvious concern when Robinson Cano had to leave the All-Star Game in the top of the first inning, but the Yankees' second baseman said that he was not worried about having to miss any playing time.
Cano exited the Midsummer Classic shortly after being drilled in the right quadriceps with Matt Harvey's 96-mph fastball, but some ice and rest were enough to get Cano back in the Yankees' lineup on Friday.
"From the first day, it just felt a little tight, but no pain or anything," Cano said. "I just moved it around a little bit and it feels pretty good."
Cano was carrying a nine-game hitting streak as the Yankees resumed play in Boston. He tried to stay in Wednesday's All-Star Game at Citi Field but left after one batter, yielding to pinch-runner Dustin Pedroia.
"It started getting tighter when I was on first, and I don't want to take my chances," Cano said.
Cashman expects A-Rod to join Yanks on Monday
BOSTON -- The Yankees are preparing to have Alex Rodriguez active and in their lineup on Monday against the Rangers in Arlington after the slugger's Minor League rehabilitation stint expires.
Rodriguez is currently playing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and hit a two-run homer on Thursday against Louisville. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that the club's best-case scenario is to have Rodriguez playing third base on Monday.
"He's due to DH on Sunday [at Triple-A]. If he gets through the weekend fine, and he responds to the DH fine and flying from Scranton to join us in Texas, all that is fine and he's like, 'I'm ready to go,' [then] he's in there," Cashman said.
Cashman left some wiggle room in case Rodriguez is fatigued, saying that the Yankees would be willing to push Rodriguez's 2013 debut to Tuesday, if necessary.
"Ultimately the hope is that he's ready for us on Monday," Cashman said.
Brent Lillibridge became the most recent addition to the Yankees' third-base carousel on Friday. Kevin Youkilis, David Adams, Jayson Nix, Chris Nelson and Luis Cruz entered play Friday having combined for four homers and 28 RBIs, the lowest hot-corner production in the American League.
"I think [Rodriguez] will be better than the production we've gotten from third so far this year, all due respect to everyone else," Cashman said.
Bombers bits
• The Yankees unconditionally released outfielder Brennan Boesch to create room on the 40-man roster for Lillibridge. Boesch hit .275 (14-for-51) with three homers and eight RBIs in 23 games for New York this season, and was playing at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• The Yankees are hopeful that outfielder Curtis Granderson (fractured left fifth metacarpal) will begin a Minor League rehabilitation assignment within seven to 10 days, Cashman said.
• Right-hander David Phelps (right forearm strain) is tentatively slated to begin a Minor League rehab assignment on Tuesday. Nix (right hamstring strain) also should begin to play Minor League games within a week.
• On this date in 1959, Enos Slaughter became the oldest Yankee to hit a home run at 43 years and 83 days old.
