On April 10, 1913 -- 100 years ago Wednesday -- the former New York Highlanders played their first game under a new name: "the Yankees."
Exactly a century later, that name is now one of the most recognized in the entire sports world.
The club officially changed its name in 1913 after a decade in which newspapers had begun referencing the team as the Yankees so it would fit in their headlines.
The Yankees lost to the Senators that day, 2-1, and wouldn't win their first game until five days later, when they topped Boston, 3-2.
Soon enough, however, winning would become a theme. One hundred years, 27 World Series titles and 40 American League pennants later, no club has done it more.
