DETROIT -- Phil Hughes is set to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and will start against the Tigers at Comerica Park, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has confirmed.
Hughes had been scheduled to make a Minor League rehabilitation start on Saturday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but with the Yankees needing pitching help at the big league level, the right-hander's travel itinerary was altered.
The 26-year-old Hughes last pitched on Monday, throwing seven innings for the Class A Tampa Yankees in an extended spring training game in Florida, and said that he felt good and was ready for whatever the big league club asked of him.
David Phelps was originally listed as the Yankees' probable starter for Saturday against the Tigers, but he is now expected to slide into a long-relief role to help out the club's overtaxed bullpen.
Among others who have been used heavily, Shawn Kelley was needed to throw 43 pitches in Friday's 8-3 loss to Detroit and long reliever Adam Warren threw 86 pitches in Wednesday's 7-4 loss to the Red Sox in New York.
Hughes' spring was derailed on Feb. 18 when he suffered a bulging disk in his upper right back while covering first base in fielding drills. He did not make an official Grapefruit League start for the Yankees, though he made appearances against Minor League competition later in camp.
