The Yankees are searching far and wide for a replacement for first baseman Mark Teixeira, who is sidelined until May with an injured right wrist.
In-house candidates Dan Johnson and Juan Rivera are expected to challenge for the suddenly available playing time. Now Derrek Lee, a 37-year-old veteran who last played in 2011, can reportedly be thrown into the mix.
The Yankees have reached out to the two-time All-Star about their vacant first-base job, according to a New York Times report. Lee last played for the Orioles and Pirates in 2011, when he batted .267 with 19 homers and 59 RBIs in 113 games.
According to the report, no deal was pending as of Sunday night, though Lee appeared interested in the opening.
A three-time Gold Glove Award winner, Lee compiled a .281 average and 331 homers over 15 seasons, the majority of which were spent with the Marlins and Cubs. He finished third in the balloting for the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 2005, when he paced the NL with a .335 average to go along with 46 homers and 50 doubles. He collected five hits in the 2003 World Series, when his Marlins topped the Yankees in six games.
Teixeira is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks after straining a tendon in his right wrist last Tuesday while swinging a weighted bat off a tee.
Rivera is batting .346 this spring. Johnson has just one hit in 18 at-bats, though he has drawn five walks.
