The Yankees' hard-hitting middle infield was honored on Thursday, as second baseman Robinson Cano and shortstop Derek Jeter picked up Silver Slugger Awards.
The awards go to the best offensive players at each position in the American League and National League -- based on voting by coaches and managers from both leagues -- and were presented live on MLB Network. The Yankees joined the Tigers and Nationals in collecting more than one, and now have done so in seven of the past eight years.
This is the fourth career Silver Slugger for Cano, and the fifth for Jeter, who trails only teammate Alex Rodriguez (seven) and Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. (eight) among AL shortstops since the award's inception in 1980. Cano has won three straight times; it was Jeter's first Silver Slugger since 2009.
Cano led all Major League second basemen with 161 games played, a .313 batting average, 33 home runs, 94 RBIs and 48 doubles, while tying for the top spot with 105 runs scored. The eight-year veteran posted career highs in slugging percentage (.550), OPS (.929) and total bases (345).
Jeter racked up a Major League-best 216 hits -- the second-highest total of his career -- while finishing fifth in the AL with a .316 batting average. The 38-year-old hit 15 home runs and posted a .791 OPS, both his highest marks since 2009. His 32 doubles were his most since '07.
