Pettitte passes Koufax for latest milestone

ARLINGTON -- Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte tied and surpassed Sandy Koufax on baseball's all-time strikeouts list on Wednesday, tying former Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown for 39th place.

Pettitte equaled Koufax's lifetime mark of 2,396 strikeouts with a swinging punchout of the Rangers' Mitch Moreland in the second inning, then passed Koufax by freezing Geovany Soto looking.

Of course, Koufax compiled his lifetime total in a much shorter career than Pettitte's. It took Koufax just 2,324 1/3 innings to reach his mark, pitching for the Dodgers from 1955-66; Pettitte entered play on Wednesday with 3,235 1/3 career innings.

Once Pettitte moves past Brown, Dennis Eckersley holds 38th place on the all-time strikeouts list with 2,401.

Granderson readies for first Minors rehab game

TAMPA, Fla. -- Curtis Granderson packed his bats and his equipment into his rental car as he left the Yankees' Minor League complex early Wednesday afternoon. He's only heading across Dale Mabry Highway, but Thursday will be a big step forward for Granderson and infielder Jayson Nix.

Granderson and Nix will join Class A Advanced Tampa on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. Granderson said he's scheduled to start in left field and play five innings in his first Minor League rehab game. He will likely remain with the Tampa Yankees through the weekend before the team re-evaluates his progress.

"I think you have to give him some at-bats to see how he feels," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Granderson in Arlington. "He hasn't had a ton of at-bats. I think to be fair to him, you have to give him some at-bats."

Nix, out since July 1 with a strained right hamstring, began his rehab assignment Wednesday, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout while playing five innings for the Gulf Coast League Yankees at Steinbrenner Field.

"Things are getting good," Granderson said. "The main thing now [is taking more] at-bats. Game at-bats are obviously going to be a good thing, and we'll start that tomorrow."

The 32-year-old outfielder has played only eight games for the Yankees this season, dealing first with a fractured right wrist, then returning to the disabled list on May 25 with a fractured left pinky. After another long recovery process, Granderson said the rehab assignment came about quicker than expected. He's taken part in only three simulated games, so his timing at the plate isn't quite up to speed.

"Everything else is good," Granderson said. "Arm, legs, defensively -- all that good stuff. Now, it's just a matter of innings. Five innings, that's going to be a lot, because I haven't done that. We'll see how everything rebounds back, but [a return to the Majors] should be hopefully sooner than later.

"I'm excited to get a chance to go tomorrow. It kind of came up on me quickly over the past week. I knew we were starting the sim games and everything, then, next thing you know, I'm packing my bags up today."

Running bases may be Jeter's final step

ARLINGTON -- Yankees captain Derek Jeter took batting practice and ground balls again on Wednesday as he attempts to rejoin the team in time for Saturday's game against the Rays.

Jeter, 39, has run sprints the last two days but has not yet been cleared to run the bases. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Jeter would likely take that step on Friday, which calls into question if Jeter would be ready to play on Saturday.

"Nothing's out of the question, but I'm not so sure we'll see him Saturday," Girardi said. "You've got to be able to run at 100 percent and know there's no soreness, no pain, and that everything works proper."

Girardi was asked if Jeter, who is rehabbing a strained right quadriceps, might need to go back on a Minor League rehab assignment before returning.

"We haven't gotten that far yet," Girardi said.

Phelps slated for rehab start before returning

ARLINGTON -- Yankees right-hander David Phelps is expected to make at least one more Minor League rehabilitation start for the club.

Returning from a strained right forearm, Phelps threw 61 pitches for Double-A Trenton against Altoona on Tuesday, allowing two runs and two hits -- including a homer -- in 3 2/3 innings.

"He felt OK," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Phelps, who walked three and struck out six. "Probably not as sharp as we've seen him during the course of the season, but I kind of expect that when you haven't been on the mound and you haven't faced hitters in a while.

"I think we'll see him in New York and he'll throw a bullpen for us on Friday, and then he'll probably go out on another rehab start."

Bombers bits

• It was curious when right-hander Michael Pineda was removed from his start on Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after just 39 pitches, but general manager Brian Cashman said that the reason for Pineda's early hook was "innings management."

"I think they're trying to manage his innings because he's coming off that shoulder surgery," Girardi said. "They don't want him to go over a certain level -- that's why you're seeing him back off a little bit. That will increase as time goes on. They're scaling back just because they're worried about the amount of innings after sitting out a year."

• The Yankees' Aug. 18 game against the Red Sox has been picked up by ESPN and will be played at 8:05 p.m. ET.

• On this date in 1983, the infamous "Pine Tar Game" was played at Yankee Stadium. Kansas City's George Brett hit a two-out, ninth-inning homer off Goose Gossage to give the Royals an apparent 5-4 lead, but Brett was subsequently called out by umpire Tim McClelland after Yankees manager Billy Martin pointed out that Brett's bat exceeded the acceptable 18 inches of pine tar. The Yankees won, 4-3, but the victory was only temporary, as the American League upheld the Royals' protest. The game was resumed, including Brett's homer, on Aug. 18 and Kansas City completed the win.

Running is Jeter's greatest remaining hurdle

BOSTON -- Derek Jeter dipped into his stash of Louisville Sluggers and disappeared down the ancient Fenway Park runway, a dank passageway that leads from the visitors' clubhouse to the playing field.

Was this a significant step in the Yankees captain's recovery? Not just yet. Jeter has not been cleared to resume swinging a bat; instead, he was volunteering to stand in as a visual aid while Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes threw bullpen sessions as preparation for their next starts.

"It'd be kind of hard to swing while they're throwing a bullpen," Jeter joked. "I think I'm hitting tomorrow. I think."

Jeter is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list from his strained right quadriceps next Saturday against the Rays at Yankee Stadium, but it is less than certain that he will be able to do so.

"I guess anything is possible," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I'm just not sure. I think the biggest hurdle he would have to clear is running. I wouldn't rule it out, but I wouldn't say I'm 100 percent sure he'll be back [on Saturday]."

The Yankees have not yet cleared Jeter to resume light jogging, let alone run the bases or take ground balls, but Jeter believes he will be ready to play shortstop in the minimum possible time frame.

"I've got a whole week," Jeter said. "I think I will be there."

Jeter said that he has not felt any discomfort in his quad for several days. He said that he generally speaks to head athletic trainer Steve Donohue on a daily basis to iron out his recovery progress and what he will be permitted to do.

"I come here, I get my treatment and I understand it takes time," Jeter said. "I can't play until Saturday anyway, so there's no reason to go out and start running the bases at full speed today. I know things take time, but I don't really sit around and dissect what I'm doing on each particular day.

"I do what I'm told. I want to play as soon as I can play."

Granderson taking BP; Phelps throws

BOSTON -- The Yankees understandably kept close tabs on Alex Rodriguez's recovery during his time with their top Minor League farm club, but several of the club's other injured big leaguers are also making significant progress down at the organization's Tampa, Fla., training facility.

Outfielder Curtis Granderson is taking batting practice and should participate in simulated games shortly, according to manager Joe Girardi, and right-hander David Phelps threw a bullpen session on Saturday as he aims to rejoin the Yankees' starting rotation.

"He said he felt better than his last bullpen," Girardi said of Phelps, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain. "I don't think he means so much physically, but he probably threw the ball a lot better. When you don't throw for two weeks, you're going to be a little off."

Girardi said that he is uncertain what the Yankees' plan will be for Phelps, who is 6-5 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 games (12 starts) this year.

"He left as a starter, and we envision him as a starter," Girardi said. "I'm not sure what exactly is going to happen, though, when he comes back. We've got to see how he feels and how he does."

Girardi noted that catcher Francisco Cervelli is taking dry swings and throwing, and "says every day his arm feels better." Infielder Jayson Nix got six at-bats in a simulated game on Saturday but did not test his strained right hamstring on the bases.

Bombers bits

• Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia celebrated his 33rd birthday on Sunday. Three previous times, he had made a start on his birthday (2002 and '06 with Cleveland, and '11 with the Yankees), going 0-2 with a 5.94 ERA in those outings.

• Robinson Cano carried an 11-game hitting streak into Sunday's series finale against the Red Sox, marking a Yankees season high. Cano, who singled in the second inning to extend his streak to 12, entered Sunday hitting .389 (14-for-36) with three runs scored, two doubles, a homer, 10 RBIs, nine walks and a .500 on-base percentage during the stretch.

• On this date in 1984, the Yankees retired Roger Maris' No. 9 and Elston Howard's No. 32, dedicating plaques in their honor in Monument Park.

Mesa, Neal brought up to boost Yanks' depth

BOSTON -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shuttle delivered two more players to the Yankees' clubhouse on Saturday morning, as outfielders Melky Mesa and Thomas Neal joined the big league club at Fenway Park.

In corresponding roster moves, the Yankees placed outfielder Zoilo Almonte on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle and designated infielder Alberto Gonzalez for assignment.

"We probably see Thomas more as maybe a DH against some left-handers, and Melky more as an outfielder against some of the guys," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We'll use them both, and [Brent] Lillibridge and [Luis] Cruz can play anywhere in the infield, so we're covered there."

Girardi said that Almonte is traveling to Tampa, Fla., and will have an MRI performed on his ankle there. Almonte injured his ankle stepping awkwardly on first base while trying to beat out a second-inning double-play ball in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Mesa, 26, was hitting .249 with nine homers and 22 RBIs in 65 games at Triple-A. It is the second stint with the Yankees this year for Neal, 25, who was batting .314 with two homers and 29 RBIs in 66 Triple-A games.

When Mesa appears in a game, he will become the 46th different player to appear in a game this season for the Yankees, surpassing their total from all of last season.

"I'm pretty familiar with a lot of the guys, most of the guys; we've had a lot of them in Spring Training," Girardi said. "It's probably harder on the clubhouse guys."

Fenway faithful shower Rivera with respect

BOSTON -- The last time Mariano Rivera heard cheers at Fenway Park was Opening Day 2005. The Red Sox had just hoisted their first championship banner in 86 years, advancing to the World Series after toppling Rivera's Yankees in an epic seven-game American League Championship Series.

Rivera laughed off the cheers that day, even doffing his cap to the largely pro-Red Sox crowd. The fans returned the favor in the ninth inning on Saturday, offering the retiring closer a standing ovation as he entered for the ninth inning of the Yankees' 5-2 win over Boston.

"Yesterday, when I was going to the bullpen, they did the same thing," Rivera said. "It's like an appreciation, I guess. It's great, though. They do that, acknowledge you knowing that you've been there for so many years."

"I think it's the class of the fans here," manager Joe Girardi said. "Even though there's been a lot of history between Mo and the Red Sox, a lot of times he's been in games that are extremely important, and I think they understand what Mo has done and what he's meant to the game. And I'm sure Mo is appreciative."

After a period of struggles against the Red Sox that included games at the height of the rivalry, Rivera has straightened out his issues with Boston, striking out two around a bloop single to convert his 12th straight Fenway save opportunity on Saturday -- a streak that dates back to June 3, 2007.

"I always love to pitch here. Always," Rivera said. "Yankee Stadium is home, but when I come here, this is a great game. We play big, big games here. It's always good."

Rivera said that he had "a great day" at Fenway Park on Saturday, and it extended beyond the nine innings on the field. He met with a dozen Red Sox fans and employees in a skybox above the third-base side on Saturday, hearing their inspirational stories as Rivera's "Mo-ment of Thanks" tour continued.

J.P. and Paul Norden, brothers from Stoneham, Mass., who each lost part of their right legs in the Boston Marathon attack, had the chance to interact with Rivera, as did 13-year-old Harry Clark, a Jimmy Fund patient from Wellesley, Mass., who developed an inoperable brain tumor in 2009 but continues to cheer for David Ortiz and his teammates.

Rivera said that he was also touched by his meeting with 19-year-old Fernando Morales, a Jimmy Fund patient from Norwood, Mass., who was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in 2011 and recently relapsed. Unable to continue playing soccer and running track, Morales has turned his attention to furthering his education.

"It was wonderful," Rivera said. "He's not giving up. He's going and doing different things. That's what it is all about. It was wonderful, beautiful. We had a great time."
