Humble Torre preparing for ultimate honor

Written By limadu on Kamis, 24 Juli 2014 | 23.49

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- For Joe Torre and his five fellow inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the months of anticipation will end on Sunday.

Torre will stand on the stage behind the Clark Sports Center, and after the inscription on his plaque is read by Commissioner Bud Selig, he'll stop for a moment to soak in the sea of fans on the meadow in front of him before moving to the podium. He'll then deliver a speech that has been months in the making.

It's a place Torre never imagined he'd be standing.

"I think it's going to be a pretty nervous time for me," Torre said. "I'm going to be more nervous leading up to it than when I get up there to do it. I'm hoping that's the case, anyway, because I don't want to make a complete fool of myself. I want to be able to deliver a message that I believe is necessary. Anything that means a great deal to you, I think there's a lot of anxiety that's attached to it. Then, when the time comes, you hope that you can speak from the heart, say the right thing and say it in the right way."

Torre will be inducted on Sunday with Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa, a trio of the greatest managers of all time, all elected late last year by the Expansion Era Committee. They'll be joined by 300-game winners Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine and slugger Frank Thomas -- elected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America in January -- to form one of the most august Hall of Fame classes in history.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will air Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET, live on MLB Network and simulcast on MLB.com and the At Bat app.

Currently Major League Baseball's executive vice president of baseball operations, Torre is fifth all-time in managerial victories with 2,326, behind Connie Mack (3,731), John McGraw (2,763), La Russa (2,728) and Cox (2,504). Torre's 84 postseason wins are by far the most in history, and his four World Series victories with the Yankees represent the same number achieved by Cox and La Russa combined. La Russa won three titles with the A's and Cardinals and Cox won one with the Braves despite a record 14 division titles in a row.

Torre was hoping that he, La Russa and Cox would hit the trifecta and that all three would be inducted together. From the moment he received the call in December and walked into a news conference at the Winter Meetings in Nashville and saw the other two there, Torre knew that this weekend would be something special. They were all elected unanimously by a 16-member committee.

"It felt so good the way it happened," Torre said. "My preference was to have everybody elected, if that was practically possible to be the case. Since that morning in December, it has been a whirlwind for me. I never let myself think about the Hall of Fame very much. You always knew what the Hall of Fame represented. It always got my attention when I was in the company of a Hall of Famer. And then in a short period of time, I get a phone call, and all of a sudden I'm in a different place. It's been hard to describe.

"The one thing I have to keep reminding myself -- because if I think about it too much, I get stressed out -- I just have to make sure I take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, drink it all in and enjoy every bit of it."

Torre's life has been one of dichotomies. He was raised in Brooklyn and because of family proclivities grew up rooting for the New York Giants rather than the Brooklyn Dodgers when both National League teams still inhabited New York. Unlike the marginal Cox and La Russa, Torre was a near-Hall of Fame player in his own right. He came up in 1961 as a catcher with the Milwaukee Braves and won an NL batting title with a .363 average in 1971 as a third baseman for the Cardinals, one of five teams he'd eventually manage.

Torre, a .297 career hitter, saw his playing career end abruptly a few months into the 1977 season shortly after the Mets made him manager just weeks before Tom Seaver was traded to the Reds at the dawn of MLB's free-agency era. It took rocky managerial tenures with the Mets, Braves and Cardinals before he replaced Buck Showalter as skipper of the Yankees in 1996. Torre, a candidate for the job of general manager, was not a solid choice to manage the team by late principal owner George Steinbrenner. Even after naming Torre, Steinbrenner almost brought back the dethroned Showalter at the last minute.

"What I learned from every managing job is that there are certain things you don't care for in the job that you have to do; it's just learning how to do it," Torre said. "I don't like confrontation. Probably from my childhood, it was something I never looked forward to. But I realized in this job it was necessary. I always tried to find a positive way to be critical of a player, at least get a message across to a player. I had to learn to hone my communication skills. You learn a lot by having to address the media every day, and when you do it in New York, as Sinatra says, 'If you can do it there, you can do it anywhere.' I believe that to be the case. It's a good test."

Torre would be tested every day, although his Yankees won the World Series four times and the American League pennant five times in his first six seasons as their manager. Such was life under the man they called "The Boss." Torre was elated to finally win a World Series, a goal that eluded him as a player, but even then, he was struck by personal tragedy. His older brother, Frank, himself a former Major Leaguer, underwent a heart transplant just before the Yankees defeated the Braves in 1996. And Torre himself was struck by prostate cancer in the spring of 1999, not long after leading the Yankees to a sweep of the Padres in the 1998 World Series following a record 125 wins between the regular season and postseason.

Such are the vagaries of life. But miraculously, the transplant took and Frank, now 82, is very much alive. More than a decade later, Torre, at 74, is a longtime cancer survivor. By 2007, following 12 consecutive trips to the playoffs, Torre sensed that his time with the Yankees had come to an end. After losing in the AL Division Series to the Indians, the Yankees offered Torre a one-year contract at far less guaranteed money than he had been making. Recognizing a lack of support from upper management, he walked out and joined the Dodgers, with whom his personal run of reaching the playoffs stretched to 14 consecutive seasons, before he retired from the dugout in 2010.

Torre's relationship with the Yankees after he left began as occasionally tenuous, but recently he has been back in pinstripes from time to time. The Yankees are teaming with MLB to conduct a party in Torre's honor this weekend, and almost seven years after departing, his uniform No. 6 will be retired in a Monument Park ceremony at Yankee Stadium later this summer.

Right now, life for Torre is good. He is on the brink of induction, and what was once unimaginable is about to become reality.

"Once you get that phone call, it changes you," Torre said. "As far as it sinking in, it makes you feel totally different, in a positive way. And the time I spent up in Cooperstown for the orientation [in March], it just didn't seem real. I look forward to this coming weekend, because I have no clue how I'm going to feel and no clue about how I'm going to start my comments. But I have a feeling by the time Sunday rolls around, I'll have a pretty good idea."

Rangers, Yanks derailed by unexpected deluge

By Jamal Collier / MLB.com | 7/24/2014 12:55 A.M. ET

NEW YORK -- When the rain started pouring with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, it came down much more abruptly and faster than anyone anticipated.

The grounds crew had a difficult time covering the field -- at one point, a member actually was trapped underneath the tarp -- and it took two attempts to adequately cover the infield. By the time the grounds crew was successful, most of the infield was already drenched with water.

"I've never seen it when it rained so hard and so fast that it weighed down the tarp, and then the mud on the infield --[the tarp] wouldn't slide," crew chief Dale Scott said. "That dual effect is what caused the issues."

Those tarp issues are what ultimately caused the Rangers-Yankees game to be called after 4 1/2 innings and a 1 hour and 49-minute rain delay, leaving New York with a 2-1 victory.

The rain stopped for a moment and the crew went to work to repair the field, and it looked as if they had created a playable field. The game was expected to restart at approximately 10:05 p.m. ET, but that was until both Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Rangers manager Ron Washington came out to walk the basepaths and quickly disapproved.

"We felt the field was not safe, and we were waiting to see what could possibly be done," Girardi said.

Washington called the field a hamstring waiting to be pulled.

"It was sinking, it was soft, it was very soft," he said. "Especially around the basepaths, around the baselines and around each bag, and you couldn't get a lead at first base unless you were a couple feet under."

After the managers voiced their disapproval, the umpire and grounds crews weighed their options on what additional work could be done. Then the rain started again and the game was officially called a short time later.

"The surface looked great," Scott said. "Underneath, though, it was just squishy."

Scott agreed that while the grounds crew did the best they could do under the circumstances, their trouble getting the tarp on quickly enough all but sealed the decision to end the game.

The Rangers, who had their ace Yu Darvish on the mound and trailed by just one run, were not happy.

"I am watching from a time zone away, but I wasn't real pleased," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "I don't think there was any intent on anybody's part. But for the way it played out, I don't think that should happen. We lost a four-inning game because of the ground situation -- that shouldn't happen."

The Yankees escaped with a victory and did not have to use their bullpen, which was exhausted by Tuesday's 14-inning affair. They have now had two games called early due to rain, including a 3-1 loss to the Orioles the day before the All-Star break.

"I guess we kind of were owed this one after what happened in Baltimore right before the break, I feel like, and it's good." Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner said. "We'll take a win any way we can get it."

Jeter receives a 'Terrific' endorsement

NEW YORK -- The pride that flows through the body of Tom Seaver these days defies measurement. He is a rightfully proud man, but he doesn't beat his chest. Indeed, he seldom mentions his successes. They're a matter of record. It's enough for him to say "I'm as proud as I can be" about his career as a pitcher, his election to the Hall of Fame by an unequaled mandate and the fine cabernet sauvignon that carries his monogram, GTS.

George Thomas Seaver has made it to the top in two ultra-competitive industries. His 2009 cabernet received a 97-point rating, something akin to Gibson's 1.12 ERA. And, in the parlance of scouts, his Hall of Fame ballot percentile, 98.84, touches unanimity, as his fastball used to touch the mid-90s. It's something akin to Wilt's 100.

Though Seaver no longer sips the good stuff his vineyard produces, his pride is such that he wants to maintain the level of excellence his cabernet achieved. But while his Hall of Fame standing has brought him unique acclaim and been so fulfilling, he is quite willing to be displaced atop the list -- so long as his replacement is the right player.

Derek Jeter is the right player.

Seaver says so. Moreover, he believes the Yankees captain ought to be the first unanimously elected Hall of Famer.

"I can't see how he won't be," Seaver said on Wednesday from his home/vineyard in Calistoga, Calif., "unless somebody beats him to the punch."

Not likely. If DiMaggio, Aaron, Gibson, Mantle, Koufax, Mays, Ruth, Gehrig, Maddux, Cal, Gwynn, Killer, The Big Train, Spahnie, Stan the Man, Yogi, Tyrus Raymond, Nolie, Lefty Grove, The Rajah, Clemente, Rapid Robert, Greenberg, Foxx and Mr. Theodore Ballgame were not unanimously elected, who's to say anyone ever will be?

Seaver is.

"I've thought about it; Jeter should be the one," Seaver said. "What can you say he hasn't done? He has every credential imaginable -- great player, good citizen. He plays the game properly, respects the game and his predecessors. He's done it in the big city, for one team that wears a uniform of greatness. He has no marks against him. He has the numbers. And he wins.

"He's a class act all the way. A pro's pro, a gentleman's gentleman. If you're starting a franchise, who do want as your first pick? I'll take Jeter, thank you. And I'm sure I wouldn't get too many arguments."

Jeter is five-plus years away from eligibility for the Hall of Fame ballot. Unless he revises his retirement plans, he will be included on the ballot mailed to voting members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America late in 2019. And unless the electorate somehow detects an overriding flaw in the Yankees shortstop's résumé, he will be inducted in 2020 (note the two 2s; fitting).

Better make reservations now. Cooperstown will be rather crowded that weekend if only those who revere Jeter make the trip to upstate New York.

"I'd like to be there when he goes in," Seaver said.

Seaver says might even toast Jeter with a glass of the good stuff. The Franchise toasting the Captain. One New York baseball icon saluting another. The all-time Met saluting an all-time Yankee.

* * * * *

Seaver says he already has bottles of the good stuff in the cellar of Hall of Fame board chair Jane Forbes Clark for this weekend. Other wines will be made available, too. The current group of Hall of Fame players includes a number of men who like their wine, mostly pitchers -- Gibson, Carlton and Sutton among them.

A few years back, the pitchers denied the position players. But no longer.

"Anyone can. You don't have to bring any," Seaver said. "We don't exclude anyone now. Not even Fisk."

But Seaver himself is not likely to partake. His ongoing problems with Lyme disease and normal changes of taste have made even the good stuff less satisfying for him. "Haven't had a sip in four years," Seaver says, though not proudly.

The disease is in a second go-round with Seaver. It has affected him in so many ways -- physically and mentally. It has robbed him of enjoyment and forced him to make three doctor visits each week for injections that help him deal with the debilitating symptoms. At age 69, Seaver lacks the memory he had at age 64. He can't recite the sequence of pitches he threw Clemente in one 1970 confrontation, as he could in 2008. He doesn't recall all the home runs he hit. The anecdotes he shares have holes in them now.

"And if I don't remember all of something," Seaver says. "I just ad lib. I think I pitched 150 shutouts, right?"

Seaver's first Lyme disease experiences were in 1991 -- he thinks. The symptoms returned four years ago and dragged him down. He always enjoyed induction weekend in Cooperstown as much as anyone, but the disease has prevented him from attending for three years. His problems were a whispered topic when the Hall of Famers assembled in 2011. Those who had spoken with him feared early-onset Alzheimer's disease. His speech was slow and disjointed. He clearly wasn't himself.

As recently as last summer, Seaver wondered whether he'd fly again. Getting to the airport troubled him more than the prospect of coast-to-coast flying.

"There were lots of things that bothered me and things I couldn't do," Seaver said.

But the vineyard has kept him going. Seaver rates his days on a 1-to-10 scale. He's had "a lot of 8s for while." Wednesday was a 9. He's hoping for 9s this weekend when he renews his Hall of Fame relationships. But he can't count on feeling terrific.

Seaver said Thursday he works six to seven hours each day. "It's a passion, and it's good cardio work," he said.

Seaver attacks his work as he attacked hitters -- with forethought and wisdom. "The vineyard is a gift," he said.

The irony is that Seaver no longer enjoys the fruits of his labor of love.

"I don't know; maybe I'll have a taste this weekend," he said. "But it will have to be my stuff in the glass. If I'm going to like it or not like it, I want it to be the good stuff."

Jeter atop Yanks' doubles list with No. 535

Written By limadu on Rabu, 23 Juli 2014 | 23.49

By Jake Kring-Schreifels / MLB.com | 7/23/2014 1:21 A.M. ET

With the Yankee Stadium crowd chanting his name amid a scoreless tie, Derek Jeter rose to the occasion on Tuesday night in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Rangers, adding another milestone to his collection.

Although his hit didn't lead to a run in New York's 2-1 win, Jeter ripped a one-out double down the left-field line off lefty Neal Cotts, passing Lou Gehrig with No. 535 to take over the Yankees' all-time doubles lead.

On the all-time Major League leaderboard, Jeter stands in 36th place; Al Simmons and David Ortiz are next with 539.

Carlos Beltran grounded into an inning-ending double play two batters later, sending the game to extra innings. It was Jeter's first double since July 1, a home game against the Rays.

PROMOTION PERIOD: The Promotion period (the "Promotion Period") begins at 11:00 AM Eastern Time ("ET") on October 5, 2012 and ends upon completion of the final out of the 2012 MLB World Series Championship.

HOW TO ENTER: During the Promotion Period, you may enter the Promotion by clicking on the banners, buttons and/or links within MLB.com Gameday (a free application) and following the instructions provided to register for the Promotion. If you are not already a member of MLB.com, you must become one before you can register to participate in the Contest (membership is free). There is only one (1) way to participate in the Promotion: online. No other method of entry or participation will be accepted. Additional entries beyond the specified limit will be void. Entries generated by script, macro or other automated means will be void. HOW TO PARTICIPATE:  Upon successful registration, follow the instructions provided to receive one (1) virtual bingo card (the "Bingo Card") for each game of the 2012 MLB Postseason played during the Promotion Period (each, a "Postseason Game"). In addition, during the Promotion Period, participants may utilize sharing functionality available via the Promotion upon completion of a successful Contest (the "Sharing Functionality") to receive two (2) additional Bingo Cards. For each eligible individual any entrant notifies or makes aware of the Promotion who clicks on a valid link made available via the Sharing Functionality identifiable as having come from the entrant, such entrant shall receive two (2) additional Bingo Cards (for a total of three (3) Bingo Cards). Any eligible participant who receives a Bingo Card that becomes marked with five (5) Tiles in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal row (each, a "Potential Winning Bingo Card") may be a potential Prize winner, subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules. (See the Prize Claim Section below for more information.) For purposes of this Promotion, MLB game outcomes will not be updated to reflect any official MLB statistics changes or corrections that may occur after the completion of any Postseason Game. Once each Postseason Game is final following completion of the final out of that game, it will be final for purposes of this Promotion. In the event any Postseason Game is cancelled, postponed or suspended, all Bingo Cards will be void for that game and Sponsor reserves the right to award the applicable Prizes by way of random drawing from among all eligible participants as of the time of such cancellation, postponement or suspension.

ALL POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARDS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY SPONSOR WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING. AN ENTRANT IS NOT A WINNER OF ANY PRIZE, EVEN IF THE PROMOTION SHOULD SO INDICATE, UNLESS AND UNTIL ENTRANT'S ELIGIBILITY, THE POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARD AND ENTRANT'S COMPLIANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED BY SPONSOR AND ENTRANT HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT SUCH VERIFICATION IS COMPLETE. SPONSOR WILL NOT ACCEPT SCREEN SHOTS OR OTHER EVIDENCE OF WINNING IN LIEU OF ITS VALIDATION PROCESS.

Limit one (1) Prize per person, per family and per household.
