McCann remains in after fouling ball off toe

Written By limadu on Minggu, 13 Juli 2014 | 23.49

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 7/12/2014 8:45 P.M. ET

BALTIMORE -- Brian McCann underwent X-rays that came back negative after fouling a ball off his right foot during the Yankees' 3-0 victory over the Orioles on Saturday. The catcher believes that he should be able to play on Sunday night in the team's final game before the All-Star break.

Serving as New York's designated hitter, McCann fouled a ball off his instep in the seventh inning, an at-bat in which he singled to center field. McCann was 3-for-4 for the afternoon, but he limped down the first-base line on his last hit.

"It hit me right on the bone, right on the first toe," McCann said. "I put pressure on it, and it hurt pretty bad. I was hoping for the best."

Since July 2, when hitting coach Kevin Long revealed that McCann had eliminated a toe-tap from his stance, McCann is 14-for-35 (.400) with four runs scored, two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Tanaka opts for rest over trip to Minnesota

BALTIMORE -- Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka has decided not to attend Tuesday's All-Star Game at Target Field, the Yankees announced on Saturday.

Tanaka is currently on the 15-day disabled list with a small tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament, and he's scheduled to begin a rehab program that the Yankees hope can get him back on a Major League mound in six weeks.

Manager Joe Girardi said that Tanaka, who issued a statement on Friday apologizing to the Yankees and their fans for the injury, would prefer to skip the trip to Minneapolis and focus on his rehabilitation.

"I think it's really unfortunate, because he had a great first half and he's not able to be a part of it," Girardi said. "But for some reason, I think he's going to get a chance to be a part of another one."

Tanaka, 25, was selected as an American League All-Star after going 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts. Following the injury, Red Sox manager John Farrell replaced Tanaka on the AL squad with Boston reliever Koji Uehara.

Francis has respect for Yanks' rich history

BALTIMORE -- Jeff Francis has appeared in 238 Major League games with four clubs, but the left-hander has never had an opportunity to pitch in Yankee Stadium, something that the 10-year big league vet is looking forward to.

"It's probably been said a hundred times over, but that's a building with a lot of history, even though it's new," Francis said. "The team has a lot of history, so it's something that I'm looking forward to."

The present, and not the organization's history, was on the Yankees' mind when they acquired Francis along with cash considerations from the Athletics on Friday in exchange for a player to be named.

The Yankees could use help soaking up innings out of the bullpen, where Adam Warren described the squad as "not fresh, obviously, but I wouldn't say we're going out there pitching injured."

Francis had been working as a long reliever with the A's, for whom he was 0-1 with a 6.08 ERA in nine appearances. He started the year with the Reds, making one start.

"Right now, he's probably a two-inning guy and another left-hander," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Maybe he gets stretched out during some games for us. That's not really what you want, but maybe it happens. It's just another guy that can give you multiple innings."

To create room for Francis on the active roster, the Yankees designated right-hander Matt Daley for assignment. Daley was called up on Friday when the Yankees designated righty Jim Miller.

Bombers bits

• Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda is inching back toward game action. Pineda threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Friday at the club's complex in Tampa, Fla., and reported no issues. His best-case scenario is a big league return in mid-August.

• On this date in 1951, Allie Reynolds no-hit the Indians in a 1-0 Yankees victory against Bob Feller at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. It is the first of two no-hitters that year for Reynolds, who also no-hit the Red Sox on Sept. 28 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Tanaka apologizes for injury, vows to return strong

Written By limadu on Sabtu, 12 Juli 2014 | 23.49

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 7/11/2014 7:56 P.M. ET

BALTIMORE -- In his first public comments since being placed on the disabled list with a right elbow injury, Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka issued a statement on Friday apologizing for his current situation.

"As recently announced from the team, I will be going through some treatment and rehab on my injured elbow over the next several weeks," Tanaka said. "I give everything I have every time I take the ball. With that, I also know that there will always be a risk of injury when playing this game that I love.

"Right now I feel that the most important thing for me is to keep my head up, remain focused on the task at hand and devote all my energy into healing the injury in order to come back strong."

Tanaka, 25, was diagnosed with a small tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. Three different physicians recommended that Tanaka have a platelet-rich plasma injection and attempt to rehab the injury.

If all goes well, Tanaka could be back on a Major League mound in six weeks, though season-ending Tommy John surgery remains a possibility.

"I want to apologize to the Yankees organization, my teammates and our fans for not being able to help during this time," Tanaka said. "I accept this injury as a challenge, but I promise to do everything I can to overcome this setback and return to the mound as soon as possible."

Tanaka was off to a sensational start in his rookie season, posting a 12-4 record and a 2.51 ERA in his first 18 starts to earn selection as an American League All-Star. The Yankees have not said if Tanaka still plans to attend the July 15 All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis.

CC having knee checked by Dodgers, Rangers docs

BALTIMORE -- Seeking additional opinions on his injured right knee, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia canceled his appointment with Dr. James Andrews and set up visits with two other orthopedic specialists, the team announced on Friday.

Sabathia had been scheduled to see Andrews on Monday. Instead, he has lined up an appointment with Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and has already been seen by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister.

The Yankees have not released any details on the visits, but they remain unsure if Sabathia will be able to return this season; manager Joe Girardi has said that it is "fair to say" that Sabathia's year is over. It has been suggested that Sabathia may need microfracture surgery in his right knee, which has been said to have significant cartilage damage.

Sabathia was 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in eight starts this season, and was placed on the disabled list following a May 10 outing in Milwaukee. He had been aiming to return to the rotation shortly after the All-Star break, but again experienced swelling and inflammation after a Minor League rehab start earlier this month.

Bombers bits

• Derek Jeter is scheduled to play in all three games against the Orioles at Camden Yards this weekend, manager Joe Girardi said.

• On this date in 1939, Yankee Stadium played host to its first All-Star Game. The American League won, 3-1, as Joe DiMaggio homered.

• Jeter went 2-for-4 in Thursday's 9-3 loss to the Indians, registering the 1,000th multihit game of his career. Jeter is the sixth player in Major League history to do so, joining Ty Cobb (1,293), Pete Rose (1,225), Tris Speaker (1,059), Stan Musial (1,059) and Hank Aaron (1,046).

Roberts returns to Camden Yards with homer

By Brittany Ghiroli and David Wilson / MLB.com | 7/11/2014 11:27 P.M. ET

BALTIMORE -- Brian Roberts was greeted with a mild ovation as he came to the plate in the second inning of the Orioles' series opener with the Yankees on Friday. There was a smattering of polite applause mixed in with a handful of boos.

Miguel Gonzalez delivered just one pitch to the second baseman before Roberts gave the Oriole Park at Camden Yards crowd a familiar sight. Roberts belted a home run over the right-field wall to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Even then, there weren't many boos, and those were drowned out by the cheering New York fans.

"I know there were some people that liked me and some people that don't," Roberts said. "I kind of knew that going back, and after the home run, I really wasn't paying attention, to tell you the truth. I didn't hear it a lot; I saw my teammates and that was about it."

Roberts, who finished the night 1-for-4, had faced his former team in a pair of series in New York this season, but Friday was his first time back in Camden Yards since leaving the Orioles this past offseason.

It didn't take long for Roberts to be reminded why Oriole Park is his favorite ballpark -- but that came after he ventured into a new part of the stadium's underbelly.

He's played more games in this ballpark than anyone else, but in the 13 years he played with the O's, he never traveled past the home clubhouse and into the visitors' area.

Until Friday.

"I don't know if I walked in here one time in my career," Roberts said. "It's definitely strange to walk by the home clubhouse and come over here, but it's kind of a new chapter of life. I'm certainly excited to be back. Spent the night in my house. Good to sleep in you own bed sometimes."

It was a relatively underwhelming ovation for a player who garnered American League MVP votes during the 2005 season, but there was no undeserved animosity, either.

"I think our people are real good about that," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said before the game. "They have a real feel for the game and the history, and they remember the things that Brian did so well for us."

Roberts was named to a pair of All-Star teams during his time with the O's, twice led the AL in doubles and led the league with 50 steals in 2007.

His final four seasons in Baltimore, though, were beset by injuries, and Roberts never played more than half of any one season. This year, he's already played in 79 games -- his most since 2009 -- and entered Friday batting .246 as an everyday player for the Yankees.

By now, he's used to wearing pinstripes, although it was strange at first to be away from Camden and in a new uniform. The Baltimore years, though, will forever be the highlight of his playing career.

"At this point, I've gotten more used to [being a Yankee]," Roberts said. "I've enjoyed every day here. It's been a great experience for me, and certainly the 13 years that I had here in Baltimore were the best years of my life. Nobody can ever take that away."

Tanaka has partial UCL tear; rehab recommended

Written By limadu on Jumat, 11 Juli 2014 | 23.49

CLEVELAND -- Masahiro Tanaka has been diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, and the Yankees are hopeful that the right-hander will be able to rehab the injury and avoid season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that Tanaka has been seen by three doctors, none of whom have recommended that Tanaka should have surgery at this time. If Tanaka's rehab program is successful, he could be back on a Major League mound in six weeks.

"Hopefully no more than six weeks. Time will tell," Cashman said. "It's a disappointing situation and one that none of us wanted to be talking about or experiencing. Unfortunately, the facts are the facts. We found out now, and we know what we're dealing with."

Cashman said that the tear to the pitcher's UCL is being described as "small," and that Tanaka has been scheduled to have a platelet-rich plasma injection administered next week in New York.

"He's not the first guy to have this, and guys have been able to rehab it and get back and pitch successfully," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It is what it is. We aren't going to have him for at least six weeks, and that's the tough part. But I'm optimistic that we'll have him back."

The most prominent example of a pitcher rehabbing a UCL tear and returning to form is Adam Wainwright; Ervin Santana also did so after a similar injury, and while declining to name them, Cashman said that pitchers in the Yankees' organization have successfully rehabbed this injury.

However, many cases like Tanaka's eventually lead to Tommy John surgery. Last year, the Mets' Matt Harvey attempted to rehab before deciding to go under the knife.

"I would tell him to just go with what you feel," Harvey said. "I didn't listen to anybody. I went off of my personal feelings. It's your body that you want to throw with again, obviously. If you want to go out and try not to have [surgery] and have your mind set to that and you're 100-percent committed to that, more power to you. If it's the other way around, go get it done."

Tanaka was examined in Seattle by Yankees team physician Christopher Ahmad, as well as noted orthopedist Dr. David Altchek and Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who examined Tanaka in Los Angeles before he signed a seven-year, $155 million deal with the Yankees.

ElAttrache used an MRI taken in January to confirm that the tear was not a pre-existing injury. Girardi said that while Tanaka's workload was heavier of late, pitching on a regular five-day rotation in three of his last four starts, the Yankees paid close attention to Tanaka's health from the first day of the spring.

"I think we managed him the best we could," Girardi said. "We were careful. If you can remember, I was asked a thousand times why I moved him back about two weeks ago. We did everything we could to give him extra rest and not have him throw too many pitches. And we'll continue to do that, because we know we've got to keep him healthy."

Tanaka experienced his worst outing as a big leaguer on Tuesday, surrendering five earned runs and 10 hits -- both season highs -- over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to the Indians at Progressive Field. After beginning the year 11-1 with a 1.99 ERA, Tanaka was 1-3 with a 4.25 ERA in his last four outings.

He is the fourth member of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation to be placed on the disabled list, joining CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda. Cashman said that Tanaka's injury would not change his stance of being an aggressive buyer leading up to the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.

"We've been aggressive, because now we've got four starters that we were planning to have in the rotation out," Cashman said. "Because of that, we have been aggressive and we will continue to be aggressive, unless I'm told otherwise. We are in the middle of a division fight, and we want to stay in the fight."

Tanaka was off to a sensational start in his rookie season, posting a 12-4 record and a 2.51 ERA in his first 18 starts and earning selection as an American League All-Star. Tanaka has been replaced on the AL's roster by Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara, but Tanaka is still invited to attend the July 15 All-Star Game festivities at Target Field.

"You hope for the best," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. "I'm not a doctor and I don't exactly know what all that means, but any time you say no surgery, that's what you hope for. You hope that he gets back healthy and gets back soon."

Solarte's work in Minors gets him back to Yanks

CLEVELAND -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had completed their doubleheader against the Charlotte Knights, and Yangervis Solarte was in a Pennsylvania hotel room with a PlayStation controller in his hands, playing his copy of "MLB 14: The Show."

Shortly after midnight, Solarte's cell phone rang, and the infielder got the call back to The Show, summoned to join the Yankees on Thursday in Cleveland.

"I'm very excited right now that I've got another opportunity," said Solarte, who was in Thursday's lineup at third base. "We'll keep going again."

After making the club as a non-roster invitee this spring, Solarte was a key contributor for the first two months of the season. He was mired in a 3-for-41 (.073) funk, dropping his season average to .260, when the Yankees optioned him to the Minors on July 3 in favor of infielder Zelous Wheeler.

With the RailRiders, Solarte said that he worked with hitting coach Butch Wynegar and made a conscious effort to jump on the first pitch more often.

Solarte was rewarded with 12 hits in 20 at-bats (.600) over his five games there, leading to his callup when the Yankees placed Carlos Beltran on the seven-day concussion DL Thursday.

"I just go there and play hard, the same game," Solarte said. "I tried to just make an adjustment, a little bit more aggressive sometimes."

Bombers bits

• Brett Gardner returned to the Yankees' lineup on Thursday after being unavailable on Wednesday with what the club termed a lower abdominal strain. Gardner was also dealing with a stomach illness during the Minneapolis portion of the current road trip.

• The Yankees are unlikely to announce a starter for Sunday's game against the Orioles until Saturday, but there is a good chance the start will go to right-hander Chase Whitley, who pitched two innings in relief on Wednesday.

"I think it all depends on what happens the next few days," Girardi said. "[Pitching coach] Larry [Rothschild] and I talked about it, we brought it up today, and he said, 'Let's just get through the next few days to determine what we're going to do.'"

• On this date in 2004, the Yankees dedicated a Monument Park plaque to Hall of Fame pitcher Red Ruffing, who was with the club from 1930-46 and still owns the club record for wins by a right-hander with 231.

Tribe gives Jeter pair of unique retirement gifts

By Alec Shirkey / MLB.com | 7/10/2014 7:27 P.M. ET

CLEVELAND -- Nearly two decades after spending his first Opening Day facing off against the Tribe at Progressive Field, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter received a pair of retirement gifts from the Indians before Thursday's series finale.

Both were distinctly Cleveland.

The first was a Lego portrait of the Captain crafted by Wayne Peltz, the assistant manager for the Indians' visiting clubhouse. The second was a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar -- no doubt given in homage to the city's storied rock n' roll legacy and the presence of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

"I like playing here. I like this stadium," Jeter said earlier this week. "We've always liked coming here and playing. We've had some great battles with some really, really good Cleveland teams. They beat us in '97, we came back and beat them in '98. I enjoy coming here. It's a nice stadium, and the fans have always been great."

As Jeter accepted the good-faith offerings, he was greeted by former teammate Jason Giambi, with whom he spent seven seasons in New York. Both Giambi and former Yankee Nick Swisher got the chance to speak with their former clubhouse comrade this week.

"They're both great teammates," Jeter said. "Jason is probably one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He's just a good guy. Swisher is a fun personality who enjoys coming here. He's got a lot of opinions, which I'm sure you know. They were both fun to play with. I enjoyed my time with them."

Yankees give fans chance to interact with history

By Jamal Collier / MLB.com | 7/10/2014 7:39 P.M. ET

The "Hands on History" program takes place before select home games, mostly Saturdays. (Yankees)

NEW YORK -- The Yankees' new "Hands on History" program gives fans a chance to "reach through the glass" to hold and interact with historic artifacts at the Yankee Museum inside Yankee Stadium.

Fans will get a chance to hold Babe Ruth's bat from 1922-1923 and feel how heavy it truly is. They can see the mark from a ball on the bat that Reggie Jackson used to hit his 547th career home run. There is a glove worn and autographed by Mickey Mantle, which is rather small compared to most outfielder's gloves. But some people will be surprised when they take a look at Mantle's uniform pants from 1963, because they imagined he would be bigger than the uniform indicates.

The tour aims to give fans of all ages something to enjoy, including items from more current players, too.

So there is a jersey worn by Derek Jeter on July 9, 2011 -- the day he collected his 3,000th hit -- still stained with dirt from a slide early in that game; Ichiro Suzuki's bat and batting helmet from 2012; and the home plate used at the final game at the old Yankee Stadium and first game of the current one.

Not to mention, fans also have a chance to take pictures with the World Series rings from 2000 and 2009 or the 2009 World Series trophy. And these are just some of the items available at the museum.

"It's just such a unique and exciting way of connecting with Yankees history," said Brian Richards, museum curator. "You can relive something that you experienced growing up, or maybe that you've heard about, or maybe that you haven't heard about."

While it may seem risky to allow the public to hold these items, fans are given a tutorial at the beginning of the session where they are instructed the safe and proper way to hold and interact with each artifact.

The Yankees began the "Hands on History" program in May and have had groups of about 20-30 each time, and estimate they could accommodate about 50-60, for guests to have enough time to spend with each piece and take as many photos as they would like.

Sessions begin approximately 90 minutes before gates open for a select number of home games, mostly Saturdays. Fans interested in the experience can find more information on dates and how to sign up at yankees.com/handsonhistory.

Any eligible participant who receives a Bingo Card that becomes marked with five (5) Tiles in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal row (each, a "Potential Winning Bingo Card") may be a potential Prize winner, subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules. (See the Prize Claim Section below for more information.) For purposes of this Promotion, MLB game outcomes will not be updated to reflect any official MLB statistics changes or corrections that may occur after the completion of any Postseason Game. Once each Postseason Game is final following completion of the final out of that game, it will be final for purposes of this Promotion. In the event any Postseason Game is cancelled, postponed or suspended, all Bingo Cards will be void for that game and Sponsor reserves the right to award the applicable Prizes by way of random drawing from among all eligible participants as of the time of such cancellation, postponement or suspension.

PRIZE CLAIMS: In the event you receive a message within MLB.com Gameday notifying you that you have a Potential Winning Bingo Card, you must claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card by following the onscreen instructions provided by no later than ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game to be eligible for the Drawing (defined below). Failure to claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card within ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game will render the Potential Winning Bingo Card void and result in Prize forfeiture.

ALL POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARDS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY SPONSOR WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING. AN ENTRANT IS NOT A WINNER OF ANY PRIZE, EVEN IF THE PROMOTION SHOULD SO INDICATE, UNLESS AND UNTIL ENTRANT'S ELIGIBILITY, THE POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARD AND ENTRANT'S COMPLIANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED BY SPONSOR AND ENTRANT HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT SUCH VERIFICATION IS COMPLETE. SPONSOR WILL NOT ACCEPT SCREEN SHOTS OR OTHER EVIDENCE OF WINNING IN LIEU OF ITS VALIDATION PROCESS.

RANDOM DRAWINGS: Approximately thirty (30) minutes following the final out of each Postseason Game, five (5) potential winners will be selected by random drawing from among all eligible participants who claim valid Potential Winning Bingo Cards for that Postseason Game in accordance with these Official Rules (the "Drawing"). Subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules, the potential winners will be declared official winners of the Sweepstakes (each, a "Winner" and collectively, the "Winners"). Odds of winning a Prize will depend on the total number of Bingo Cards issued and the total number of valid Potential Winning Bingo Cards claimed for each applicable Postseason Game. Limit one (1) Prize per person, per family and per household.

PRIZES:  A maximum of two hundred fifteen (215) prizes (each, a "Prize" and collectively, the "Prizes") will be awarded (i.e. five (5) Prizes per each Postseason Game with a maximum of forty-three (43) Postseason Games), as follows:

For up to twenty-two (22) Postseason Games during the 2012 Wild Card Games and the 2012 Division Series, each Winner will receive one (1) Postseason.TV subscription for the remainder of the 2012 MLB Postseason. Approximate retail value ("ARV") of each such Prize: $4.99.

For up to twenty-one (21) Postseason Games during the 2012 League Championship Series and the 2012 MLB World Series Championship, each Winner will receive one (1) MLB.TV Offseason Package subscription. ARV of each such Prize: $24.99.

Total ARV of all Prizes: $3172.85.

For the avoidance of doubt, no Prizes will be awarded in connection with any 2012 MLB Postseason game that is not played because it is not necessary.

PRIZE CONDITIONS: All Prize details to be determined in the sole discretion of Sponsor. Each Winner is fully responsible for any and all applicable federal, state and local taxes (including income and withholding taxes). NOTIFICATION:  Each potential winner will be notified at the e-mail address, postal address and/or telephone number (in the sole discretion of Sponsor) provided at the time of entry (the "Prize Notification"). Each potential winner may be required to submit his/her valid social security number and/or other identification to Sponsor and may be required to execute, have notarized and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release of Liability and, unless prohibited by law, Publicity, within five (5) days of date of issuance.
