ALL POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARDS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY SPONSOR WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING. AN ENTRANT IS NOT A WINNER OF ANY PRIZE, EVEN IF THE PROMOTION SHOULD SO INDICATE, UNLESS AND UNTIL ENTRANT'S ELIGIBILITY, THE POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARD AND ENTRANT'S COMPLIANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED BY SPONSOR AND ENTRANT HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT SUCH VERIFICATION IS COMPLETE. Yanks need to be active to get Jeter into October

CLEVELAND -- This was the place where Derek Jeter hit his first home run, and this is his last scheduled trip here, and Monday was the day he met with the media at Progressive Field to say another farewell, of sorts, with the usual tinge of local color.

But when discussing the difficulty of getting too emotionally invested in the goodbyes, Jeter also said this:

"We have so many games left."

Exactly how many, though, is an open-ended question.

It's become increasingly clear, even in the wake of a 5-3 win here Monday night, that the Yankees are going to have to be active this month if they're going to get a satisfying answer, a satisfying end to Jeter's October-rific career. Because if you thought Mariano Rivera's big league journey coming to an official close in Houston felt odd, certainly the prospect of Jeter bidding adieu in Boston (the Yanks end the regular season there Sept. 26-28), of all places, is even worse.

The trouble, though, is that right now the Yankees simply need more horses to avoid such an end.

Relying on the uncharacteristically underwhelming nature of the American League East this year is not enough. Not after the losses of CC Sabathia (likely done for the year with knee woes), Ivan Nova (definitely done for the year with Tommy John surgery) and Michael Pineda (slowly recovering from the ever-problematic shoulder strain). Masahiro Tanaka can't pitch on zero days' rest, and the Yanks naturally have to be careful not to overtax David Robertson, All-Star setup man Dellin Betances and Adam Warren.

Yankees starters not named Tanaka have averaged 5.57 innings per start, a good deal less than the 5.92 AL average.

"That's one of the things that we've kind of fought, with some of our starters going down, is getting some length out of our starters," manager Joe Girardi said.

They got some length from an unlikely source in Monday's victory over the Indians. Shane Greene, owner of all of a third of a big league inning coming in, had sharp sinking stuff in six innings of work, allowing just a pair of runs on four hits with no walks.

More sinkerballing support arrives Wednesday, when Brandon McCarthy, acquired from the D-backs for Vidal Nuno in a swap of struggling back-end starters, officially joins the rotation. It's notable that McCarthy's ugly 5.01 ERA in the National League is somewhat misleading, as his peripherals point to a 3.79 Fielding Independent Pitching mark that is much more palatable.

"We're looking at how we can make him better," said pitching coach Larry Rothschild, "because he can really help us."

Of course, it's also worth noting that Yankees pitchers don't pitch in "Fielding Independent" conditions. They pitch in front of one of the more range-proof infields in the Majors.

So in Greene and McCarthy and possibly even lefty David Huff (currently in the 'pen), the Yanks have options to offset some of the lost innings and maybe to push the struggling Chase Whitley out of a starting slot. But there's obviously nothing bankable about that bunch, and the need for rotation consistency is augmented all the more by a lineup that can now add some knee soreness for Carlos Beltran to its list of fits and frustrations.

In other words, general manager Brian Cashman has his work cut out for him in the coming weeks.

Given their defensive limitations, what the Yankees need more than anything are strikeout pitchers (yes, plural, if possible). Bonus points if they're under contractual control beyond 2014, because it's not as if anybody's expecting a quick recovery and return to form for Sabathia or guaranteeing another stateside stay for Hiroki Kuroda.

David Price is simply not an option, because of inter-divisional reality, insufficient trade chips and the simple fact that the Rays are back in the race.

The Padres' Ian Kennedy is really an ideal fit, with a 3.87 ERA (and, since we're on a roll with it, a 2.88 FIP), 9.5 strikeouts per nine and a 4.14 strikeout-to-walk ratio that is the best of his career.

He's not a free agent for another 16 months, and the Yanks are obviously familiar with him.

They're familiar, in a very different sense, with Cliff Lee, and they're also familiar with investing incredible amounts of money in guys well on the wrong side of 30. Lee, nearing a return from a left elbow strain, is both tantalizing and treacherous at this stage, because who knows when that ligament might snap and the minimum of $50 million remaining on his contract might become an albatross. The good news is that the Yanks might be able to basically buy him -- something that's not as likely with the 30-year-old Cole Hamels, who would command a king's ransom should he be dangled.

There could be more economical options, the Wade Mileys or Jorge De La Rosas of the market. But the Yankees, at this point, need a game-changer. They've fared well in close games like the one played Monday night. Their 26-16 record in games decided by two runs or fewer is a credit to that bullish bullpen.

But they've also had 38 games in which they scored three runs or fewer, and all but nine of those have gone the way of the opposition. They've had 35 games in which the opponent scores five or more, and they've lost all but three of those. They've done what they can to weather the storms that attacked their rotation, but reinforcements are necessary to lessen the frequency of the lopsided affairs.

Otherwise, Jeter's actual adieu could come sooner than he'd like.

In 18 seasons prior to this one, his Yankees teams have averaged 96.5 wins, and he's never been a part of a sub-.500 squad. But his final Yankees team is one that has, for the most part, hovered right around .500, because Tanaka and the 'pen can't do it all. The Yanks are going to need more consistent length from their starters -- whoever they may be -- if they're going to extend Jeter's career into another October.

Jeter to be joined by Tanaka, Betances at All-Star Game

Written By limadu on Senin, 07 Juli 2014 | 23.49

Derek Jeter is bowing out, sticking to his decision to celebrate 2014 as his final season wearing pinstripes. That exit comes just as Masahiro Tanaka and Dellin Betances are on the rise, standing as some of the best that the American League has to offer.

Those storylines will come together as the trio of Yankees standouts make their trips to the All-Star Game, with Jeter, Tanaka and Betances having been selected to represent the Junior Circuit at the July 15 Midsummer Classic, to be played at Minnesota's Target Field.

It is the 14th All-Star selection for Jeter, a fitting venue for the 40-year-old shortstop to be honored near the midpoint of his farewell campaign.

"It feels good. All-Star games are fun," Jeter said after Sunday's 9-7 win in Minnesota. "I'm happy I get the opportunity to come back here. It would be special for me. It's the last one for me, so I'm glad I have the opportunity to go, but I'm extremely happy for Tanaka and Dellin, too. Those guys deserved it as much as anyone."

The Yankees' all-time franchise leader in hits, games, stolen bases, at-bats, singles and hit-by-pitches, Jeter is also tied with Lou Gehrig for the all-time lead in doubles after missing all but 17 games last season due to injury.

"After last year, just playing means a little bit more," Jeter said. "It's never a situation where I expect to go to the All-Star Game. I've never taken it for granted at all in my career any time that I've gone, and I've enjoyed each and every one of them. So I'm looking forward to this."

The only Yankee to play for the team before his 21st birthday and after his 40th, Jeter has returned strong for one last season. The selection snaps a tie with Joe DiMaggio and Mariano Rivera, both of whom were selected as All-Stars 13 times. Mickey Mantle was a 20-time All-Star.

The Yanks tried to keep expectations low for Tanaka as he made the jump from Japan to the Majors this offseason, with general manager Brian Cashman opining that -- for a price of $155 million, plus a $20 million posting fee -- the team might have acquired a potential solid No. 3 starter.

Fortunately for Tanaka and the Yankees, the right-hander has proved to be so much more. Wielding an arsenal highlighted by a world-class splitter that has been his dominant strikeout pitch in the first half, Tanaka has been the most reliable piece of the Yanks' rotation, with the team feeling like they will win every time he takes the mound.

Tanaka leads the Majors in both wins (12) and complete games (three) while ranking among the league leaders in several other categories. Because he is scheduled to pitch on Sunday for the Yankees at Baltimore, Tanaka will be replaced on the active roster and won't pitch in the All-Star Game, though he does plan to attend.

"It's obviously an event that not everybody can be a part of," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I'm very excited to get this opportunity."

After being demoted to Double-A Trenton as recently as 2012 to work on his command issues, the odds were stacked against Betances flourishing at the big league level, but the Yanks have finally hit the jackpot after moving the 6-foot-8 right-hander to the bullpen.

"I was emotional earlier, because it's been hard work," Betances said. "It's been a long journey from all the years in the Minor Leagues -- all the ups and downs, just to have such a good first half and for the players to vote for me, I'm truly humbled. It's a crazy feeling for me right now. I'm enjoying each and every day here. I'm blessed to be a Yankee."

A product of New York City, Betances has figured out how to harness his high-90s fastball and a nasty slurve/slider, turning them into strikeout weapons. Betances' first-half performance has drawn comparisons to the dominance that Rivera enjoyed in 1996, setting up for John Wetteland on a Yankees club that went on to win the World Series.

"I'm extremely happy for all of them," manager Joe Girardi said. "I think they're all deserving, obviously. To have two rookies going, that's pretty special."

Why he's an All-Star: Of Betances' last 119 outs, 62 have come via strikeout. His 13.95 strikeouts per nine innings, spanning 37 relief outings, represents the highest such mark in the Majors this season (min. 40 innings).
DYK?: Betances was born in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York, then moved to the Lower East Side before starring at Brooklyn's Grand Street Campus High School. A Yankees fan growing up, he was in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium for David Wells' 1998 perfect game.
Quotable: "It's so hard, especially for middle relievers, to make the All-Star team. I didn't know what to expect. Guys kept telling me, 'You have a good chance of being there.' It's a crazy feeling." -- Betances

Why he's an All-Star: Fueled by terrific fan support, Jeter led at every checkpoint of All-Star balloting this year, holding off his top challenger, Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox. How he made 2014 AL team: Selected by players
Why he's an All-Star: The Yankees are 13-4 in Tanaka's 17 starts, and he has recorded a quality start in all but one of those outings. He's the first Yanks rookie to throw three complete games in a season since Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez in 1998.
DYK?: Tanaka began playing baseball in first grade as a catcher, and he did not begin pitching until junior high school. He became a national icon in Japan after excelling in the Summer Koshien Tournament, striking out 458 batters over his high school career to shatter Daisuke Matsuzaka's previous national high school record of 423.
Quotable: "Obviously, I'm looking forward to it. To be part of it and to be able to meet with some of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues, that's going to be a great experience for me. If there's a chance, I'd definitely like to be able to talk with some of them and maybe pick their brains." -- Tanaka

Jeter looking forward to All-Star farewell in Minnesota

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 7/6/2014 8:50 P.M. ET

NEW YORK -- They rose as Derek Jeter dug into the batter's box in the ninth inning on Sunday at Target Field, saluting the Yankees captain's career with a standing ovation as he prepared for his final regular season at-bat against a Twins pitcher.

Jeter responded with a single to left field, capping a three-hit afternoon in front of that crowd of 31,171. Now, Jeter knows for sure that he will be returning to Minnesota for a game that will be seen by a much larger audience.

The 40-year-old Jeter has been selected as an American League All-Star for the 14th and final time, earning his ninth fan vote selection after collecting 3,928,422 votes. He led all AL shortstops at every checkpoint of the balloting process.

"After last year, just playing means a little bit more," Jeter said. "All-Star Games are never a situation where I expect to go to the All-Star Game. I've never taken it for granted any time that I've gone. I've enjoyed each and every one of them, but especially so, I'm looking forward to this one."

Jeter has been joined on the AL squad by pitchers Masahiro Tanaka and Dellin Betances, both of whom were tabbed by the player vote. Tanaka is expected to be replaced on the roster because he is scheduled to pitch on the Sunday preceding the game, but both Tanaka and Betances plan to attend Jeter's final All-Star Game.

"It makes it more fun for me, just playing with him and getting to know him better," Betances said. "In his last year, All-Star Game with him -- what could be better? I'm loving this moment right now."

"You could tell they were excited about it," said Jeter, who is hitting .273 with 23 RBIs and 29 runs scored this season. "Both of them have been outstanding this year, so I'm looking forward to enjoying it and sharing it with them."

Jeter is the seventh player in AL history to earn at least nine fan elections, joining Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. (17 with Baltimore), George Brett (11 with Kansas City) and Rod Carew (nine with Minnesota); as well as Ken Griffey Jr. (10 with Seattle); teammate Ichiro Suzuki (nine with Seattle); and Ivan Rodriguez (nine with Texas).

"I think it'll be great," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think it's great for the fans, I think it's great for baseball and I'm sure they have something special planned."

During last summer's All-Star Game at Citi Field, both clubs paid tribute to Mariano Rivera's stellar career by leaving the field empty for the Yankees closer's eighth-inning entrance. Rivera doffed his cap to all corners of the ballpark before being joined by his AL teammates, an emotional and unforgettable moment.

Red Sox manager John Farrell is expected to orchestrate a similar tribute for Jeter, who completed play on Sunday eighth on the all-time hit list with 3,400.

"I think it's important to showcase Derek for just a Hall of Fame and incredible career," Farrell said on ESPN. "I think there will be an opportunity to do just that, to highlight when he comes out of the game.

"My first thought is that it would happen inside of a defensive inning, to where he'll have a chance to salute the crowd and come off. I think it'll be great for baseball to witness his last All-Star appearance and really congratulate him on just an incredible career."

Jeter will also have the opportunity to reunite up the middle with former teammate Robinson Cano, who was voted as the AL's starting second baseman in his first year as a Mariner.

"I would love to see Robbie," Jeter said. "I played with Robbie for a long time. I was there when he came up. We're friends as well as teammates."

Jeter is one of three players in Major League history with at least 3,000 hits, 250 home runs and 350 stolen bases, along with Craig Biggio and Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson. He said that he is treating his final All-Star appearance just like the first one.

"I don't go into it with any expectations," Jeter said. "I'm just going to try to enjoy myself and have fun with whoever's here."

Tulowitzki to support Jeter's charity at Derby

By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | 7/6/2014 11:36 P.M. ET

DENVER -- Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will commemorate the final All-Star Game of shortstop Derek Jeter by contributing to the Yankee captain's charity during the Gillette Home Run Derby.

Tulowitzki is captain of the National League team in the Derby, which is July 14 at Minnesota's Target Field at 6 p.m. MT. The event raises money for MLB's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but the captains -- Tulowitzki and the American League's Jose Bautista -- are allowed to pick a charity as well.

"The charity I'm picking is the Turn 2 Foundation, which is the charity that [Jeter] has been running for a long time," Tulowitzki said Sunday. "It's a special charity. That's the kind of tribute that I'm going to do for him."

Jeter's foundation creates and supports signature programs that encourage young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and "Turn 2" healthy lifestyles. The foundation promotes and rewards academic excellence, leadership development and positive behavior.

Jeter has been Tulowitzki's role model, a player he still admires. But Tulowitzki said the contribution won't come free.

"In return, I'm looking for something from the game from him," Tulowitzki said. "That's me, as a fan. Whatever it may be, and hopefully that goes smoothly."

Tulowitzki already has said the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton is part of his team, and the remainder of the five-man NL squad will be announced Tuesday. One factor could complicate that situation, however. Tulowitzki has said he'd like to invite teammate Justin Morneau if he is on the NL All-Star squad. However, Morneau is a candidate for the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote Sponsored by Experian. Results of that election will be announced Thursday.

Immediately following the announcement of the American League and National League All-Star rosters on Sunday, fans began voting to select the final player for each league's 34-man roster via the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote Sponsored by Experian. Fans can cast their votes from a list of five players from each league until the winners are announced after the voting concludes on Thursday at 2 p.m. MT.

The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans help choose the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com and via Twitter in the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote Sponsored by Pepsi, and their collective voice will represent 20 percent of the overall vote that determines the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.

MLB.TV Premium subscribers, for the first time, will be able to live stream the All-Star Game via MLB.TV through FOX's participating video providers. Access will be available across more than 400 platforms that support MLB.TV, including the award-winning MLB.com At Bat app. MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage of the All-Star Week festivities.

The 85th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS, and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network and SiriusXM will also provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
